Where to shop in Canada?
 

I'll be traveling to Detroit soon & I'm told the group we're going w/ will be going to Canada to do some shopping. I'm not sure which part we're heading to. Although we're only going for the day I'm sure it can't be far. Any suggestions of where to head to? Best deals? <BR>Thanks.

Windsor, Ontario is just across the Detroit River. I'm sure most American's don't realize that Detroit is actually North of Ontario.

There is only I worthwhile mall in Windsor, Devonshire Mall, which is probably where the group is heading. It's about 20 mintutes from the tunnel. With 55 cents on the US dollar, there are alot of bargains to be found.

Downtown Windsor is a great place to shop. The city also has MANY great restaurants... so many that I'd be hard-pressed to recommend a favorite, although Tony Macaroni's is a neat place with great food.<BR><BR>Have fun and happy trails!<BR>Paul

What do you mean by "Detroit is north of Ontario"?<BR>Detroit is south of 95% of Ontario on my map, and south of Lake Ontario.<BR>Am I missing something?

The best place to shop in Canada is the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton AB. It is the worlds largest mall.

Rand, what they mean is that to get to Ontario (Windsor) from Detroit is you have to travel south to get there on either the bridge or tunnel. Devonshire is a nice mall, there is an outlet center going to the 401 freeway from Huron Church road (the road you get to from the Ambassador Bridge) turn left from customs. It's typical outlet shopping. Downtown Windsor does have some good shopping scattered about, great Chinese restaurants, Wah Court on Wyandotte or University are personal favorites. Freeds on Ottawa Street is a very good clothier and used to working with Americans as far as getting tax refunds etc. Windsor is just different enough to feel foreign but similar enough to be comfortable to us from the other side of the border. The wait at customs is rarely longer than a half hour these days, usually less.

I am always so amazed at how many Americans have no idea how large Canada really is. <BR>Will's suggestion of the West Edmonton Mall is a great one, if you have 5 days to drive to get there. The original post indicated that they only have the day to shop. <BR>Windsor will really be your only option, unless you drive another 1-2 hours west towards London, Ontario.<BR>There are some great malls and their downtown is filled with neat little shops.

I will be in Detroit Oct. 21-26, 2002. Can I drive my rental car from Detroit to Windsor to shop?
