I agree with the southern New England suggestions. The season is Maine does not start till 4th of July with good reason as June is rainy and cold.

Northern NE also has those nasty black flies in May. I will second either Cape Cod or the Berkshires for May. The Cape is a more compact area to visit for a week but the water will be too cold to swim in. There are lots of things for kids to do and special programs for kids at the National Seashore www.nps.gov/caco All of your other interests, shopping, hiking, antiquing, historical sites etc are available on the Cape and in South County in the Berkshires.
