Where to grab lunch before starting the Freedom Trai?
 

Another Boston question. Looking for suggestions for a good place to grab lunch before starting the Freedom Trail. Any cuisine. Just looking for someplace fun and tasty.

Scollay Square on Beacon Street for the Lobster Mac & Cheese or the Haddock. I've heard the ginger-spiced Tuna Burger is excellent, too.

Emmett's Irish Pub is a cozy spot and if you like clam chowder, it's a winner, & the Fish n Chips is very good.

Hi Spot Deli near the statehouse if you're running late and need something quick. Really good sandwiches.

If you are starting on Tremont Street on the Common I would suggest going to B. Good, Back Deck or jm Curley near Downtown Crossing--you can google any of those for more info & precise location. Or the street level takeout for the Roche Brothers store at Downtown Crossing (just outside the T station there). The last has many options and if it's a nice day you could walk up to the Common and make a bench picnic of it. There are various fast food options along Tremont across from the Common but I wouldn't recommend any of them.

If you are carrying on into the North End, wait to eat dessert there. Many Italian bakery options, all of them good in their own way, or gelato. My preference is for Bova, a few steps away from the trail on Salem Street (google it too).

I would stave off hunger with a snack and eat at the extremely kid and teen friendly food court at Faneuil Hall-Quincy Market or go for a sub or pizza in the North End.

There are food trucks on the Rose Kennedy Greenway between the Market and the North End but usually a bit out of your way.

The other choices above are all fine, too.

Ackislander, we will be with the boys. We will be coming straight from the airport and I know they will be hungry. Maybe I will feed them something from the airport food court or the Sky Club and then eat at FH/QM with dessert of cannolis in the North End. That should keep them energized until dinner at Fenway during the game. I was just trying to avoid the entire FH/QM area if possible.

There are also food trucks at the start of the Freedom Trail, adjacent to Park Street station on The Common.

That must be why I found it so soul crushing :-) (It surprised me b/c it's so inauthentic in a city that preserves its uniqueness well, but OTOH I do recognize that this kind of place is popular with and convenient for tourists.)
That said, the atrium seating area was really nice.

It is enormously popular with school groups and other tourists because it is cheap and predictable, like mall food courts they know. The food is better than airport food courts, the setting is good. It is surrounded by chain steak houses for business people staying in the neighborhood, an older demographic with similar goals.

That said, I would take teens there in a minute, give each of them some money, and yell them where to meet me when they run out.

A new company is managing the operation, and it will be interesting to see what they do.

Thanks so much for all the advice. We ended up grabbing a small (free) snack at the club at the airport and then parked at the Commons and started the trail there. We did stop for food at Fanueil Hall which I had wanted to avoid but I was traveling with kids and it was so easy. They got to sit outside, eat, watch some street performers and then finish the Trail fortified with food. Dinner was sausage and peppers and other snacks from the vendors near Fenway.
