Where to go/eat near Don Pedro Island, FL
My husband and I will be traveling from WI to Don Pedro Island, FL in early February. We are in our late 20's. We are looking for places to go during the day within an hours drive of the Island. We will be renting a car. I know it is near Englewood and Gasparilla Island.
We would like to go fishing, kayaking, sightseeing, shopping, etc. We are also looking for casual restaurants serving seafood, mexican, pizza, or local cuisine. Any suggestions?
Where do the locals go to eat? What is there to do in February in the area?
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi lildaisy,
What a wonderful break from WI winter. I live in Englewood. Don Pedro is a special place.
I just recently had an experience with a kayak outing. A group of teens that I work with at high school were treated to an outing through Grande Tours out of Placida. You can access their site at grandetours.com, I think or just Google it. The owner has lived in the area for decades and is a fabulous resource for other activities around the area.
I'll be honest and say that the dining in Englewood could be better. I will e-mail a friend of mine that dines out alot and see if she can come up with some ideas.
You should plan to visit Boca Grande (Gasparilla Island) and do a walk around the lovely little downtown area. Stop into The Temptation for a drink. Both the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film and a fairly recent Denzel Washington film (Out of Time??) was filmed there.
The art fesitival may or may not be great. We have a number at this time of year.
Weather...you will have to watch the weather forecasts just before you leave. It could be 80 or it could be 65 for highs, it all depends on the fronts that come through in the winter. To play it safe, always pack a sweater or two and a jacket. At night it will certainly cool down, especially near the water.
Enjoy!

Here is an update on the dining from my friend. This is from her not me.
On Don Pedro go to Rum Bay and have ribs or grouper. Farlow's is on water and has a tiki bar and entertainment and good food. Zydeco Grill (on Placido Rd.) and La Stanza. Not so much for the location, but the food is good. Lock and Key is right across the street from Englewood Beach. The food is good. It was recently remodeled. You can sit outside at Cafe on Dearborn and then stroll around the shops in the Old Englewood Village. They are not normally open at night, however. The location of the Fishery in Placida is lovely. Food may or may not be good. You can stroll the few cute shops around there. BTW, that is very close to Grande Tours.
Hope that helps.
