Where to go Memorial Day Weekend?

We (two adults) would like to go somewhere for Memorial Day weekend as a treat to ourselves. We cannot miss any work, so oor plan would be to leave our Wash. DC home that Friday late afternoon and return that Monday evening. We are looking to fly somewhere - eithe one-stop or non-stop, that we could get to within 4 or 5 hours. We would like to go somewhere neitehr of us has been to, and, for this trip, would like an urban area where a car is not necessary,a t least for the bulk of our time there.<BR><BR>I have been checking airfare, and here are the possiblities I ahve come up with so far (all of the fares are roughly the same for these places, $175 - $275, and we would not want to spend more than that higher amount).<BR><BR>Fort Worth, Madison - Wi, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Houston, Quebec City, Ottawa, <BR><BR>Does anyone have any suggestions on which of these to pick?

Canadian cities are a great choice-don't overlook Toronto. Our American dollar goes really far there. Weather would be great that time of year. Chicago is a great city also and very do-able w/o a car, especially if you can get a flight into Midway rather than O'Hare

I second the Toronto vote. This city has a great transit system, including an underground, and there are some neat things to see and do. Your money goes a long way in Canada.

A third vote for Toronto! I've been to alot of places and Toronto is right up at the top. It's a beautiful, clean, friendly city with a lot to do. Very diverse cultures up there as well. I can't wait to go back.

"Fort Worth, Madison - Wi, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Houston, Quebec City, Ottawa"<BR><BR>Are you serious? These are your vacation choices?? With the exception of Quebec and maybe Madison...YUCK!

Quebec City is like a mini trip to France at 1/3 the price. Also consider Montreal, one of the most fun cities in North America.

I used to live in DC and we would find great travel deals to Florida, find some fun little beach community and fly into Orlando and drive, the drive is gorgeous and you nare sure to find some fun in the sun.

Quebec would be super and maybe consider Nova Scotia?? Otherwise, have you been to Charleston? Mobile? New Orleans? San Antonio? Alburqeque? Santa Fe?

Quebec City would be my choice. I'm afraid I didn't like Toronto very much when I went there in May 1998; I didn't think it was very clean or friendly. I loved Niagara-on the-Lake, especially 4 plays in 3 days at the Shaw Festival and a jet boat ride up the Niagara Rapids to the Falls. <BR><BR>As a former Houston resident, I'd try to avoid it from April to October.

Thanks for your input so far. Yes, all choices were serious. I know that some of them..perhaps the Texas places, others..are not real tourist towns, but they all seem to have attractions that could easily fill a long weekend. Quebec would probably be a great choice...a drawback...ther airfare to there is somewhat higher than to most of the other places. Have been to some of the other places mentioned..Chicago, Santa Fe, Montreal, Charleston. When I read the rec. for Florida..it made me think of St. Augustine, another place that I've wanted to visit.<BR><BR>Earlier,we were actually thinking of taking a weeklong vacation to either Nova Scotia or to Quebec City/surrounding area, but now will not have the time. I've never thought much about going to Toronto, but I know it has a great reputation. I amy check that out further.<BR><BR>Tahnks again!

Toronto is very similar to Chicago and you've been to Chicago. Have you been to Boston? Newport, R.I.? Even though airfare is higher to Quebec, it should be less crazy over the American Memorial Day weekend. And your dollar will be strong to pay for food and hotels.

I'd vote for Quebec, very historic and walkable. Might be a bit more costly to get to, but would probably be offset by cheaper Canadian prices once there.

Of you choices, I vote for Quebec City. It's wonderful. You don't need a car. You can stay in the old city and just walk around. If you like it, you can always go back for a longer stay and take in some more of Quebec than just Quebec City. <BR><BR>Also, another vote for St. Augustine. You can probably fly non-stop from DC. Two days will give you enough time to walk around and take in the sights. Perhaps this is a better idea for such a short period of time. If you do Quebec, you will have to spend time going through customs.<BR><BR>Have a great time. I'm sure you'd be happy with either choice.

New Orleans sounds fun. 2 hours by nonstop air (Southwest, United or USAir) from any DC airport.
