For a complete change of scenery and wonderful weather, come to New England and see the fall foliage.

You haven't given us much of an idea of what you enjoy, but we can offer everything from hiking and other outdoor activities to museums, great restaurants, sports teams, etc.
|
Washington, DC, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago. All would be good for four day visits.
|
Mary,
My husband and I do about 5 4-day trips/year. Check out site59.com and look at some of their 4-day air/hotel packages.

The upper peninsula of michigan!

New Orleans is close to Houston yet totally different. May be a good place to start! Have fun.
|
I second New England. Everything is so close together up there, you could easily see 2 major cities in a fairly relaxed manner.
|
I think San Francisco or New York would make a good 4 day vacation. I have been to both for 4 day trips. October would be a great month to go to either one. Also vote for New Orleans although that may be during hurricane season.

Are you planning to fly or drive?

Message: I just returned 2 weeks ago from a 4 day trip to San Diego. We stayed at the Bahia. It is right on the Bay and a Block from Mission Beach. It was a great location and definitely not that pricy. The rooms have kitchens and living rooms and our room faced the bay. You cannot beat the people and beauty of this town. It has the best of all worlds, a city, gorgeous beaches, party beaches and tons to do. The Zoo, Sea World, La Jolla, PB, Mission Beach, Gas Lamp District. You could even take a day trip to Tijuana Mexico that is 45 minutes to an hour away. Have fun, anywhere in California is beautiful.

If the trip is Sept-Oct, then New England is definately the place to go, so that you can see the Fall Foliage.

I would suggest avoiding cities and tour Western Mass, VT, and NH.

If you like cities, go to Boston, maybe the Bosox will still be in first place, maybe not....

Gatlinburg, TN in September. October is beautiful, but too crowded. The Great Smoky mountains National Park is here and great hotels, shopping, outdoors stuff, etc. It is from everyone from Honeymooners to families to Seniors. Fly from Houston to Knoxville and it is an hour, 20 drive from there. Four days is perfect! Went as a kid and recently took my hard-to-please husband there and he was impressed!! (We are in our mid-thirties) Look in to it!

Savannah, Georgia is wonderful in the
fall of the year. Be sure to stay in
the historic district--we recommend
The Mulberry Inn on the edge of the
historic district and very near River
Street. You can walk anywhere in the
historic district--enjoy the 24 squares--each one different! Lots of unique shops, restaurants, art galleries,
wonderful architecture, beautiful old
homes. Home of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Be sure to visit Jack Leigh Gallery--Jack shot the photograph on the cover of the book.
Have meals at the Olde Pink House,
the Sapphire Grill, Suzanna's, Elizabeth
on 37th, Clary's Cafe, Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, the Savannah Tea Room,
the Gryphon Tea Room, 45 Bistro. Visit Forsythe Park. Especially take time to visit the squares, visit one of the old churches for a service, see the Telfair Museum--the list goes on and on. Savannah is a very romantic city for a couple. Watch the river for ocean liners coming into port. Have beignets and cafe au lait at Huey's on River Street, get pralines at River Street Sweets. If you belong to a private club, see if The Chatham Club is one of your reciprocal clubs and have dinner there just at sunset--get a table facing the bridge! Visit Ray Ellis' gallery--he did three of the White House Christmas cards and co-authored
two books with Walter Cronkite. Take a
riverboat ride. Allof this in the historic dictrict!! Enjoy!

|
Are you driving or flying?
Do you want Nature or Man made wonders?
Head for mountains,
if you've never been out of Texas, I'd guess you'll find Colorado pretty amazing (as well as any of the Rockies or eastern Mt. ranges)

|
If you can book two nights at El Tovar's best suite at the Grand Canyon, do it and 2 nights in Sedona.

If you love great food, New Orleans.
