Where to go in NOLA that is not trendy-

I like really good food and I don't want to be stuck for four days at the touristy spots like Cafe Du Monde-
I'm sure we'll go to those places but I want some insider reviews about the best places to go in New Orleans for music and food. Thanks!

Here are a few of my favorites:

The Bombay Club: Excellent food & drinks. We sat in a romantic little nook that was shielded by curtains. Very romantic.

Bayona: Dined here on our honeymoon. Susan Spicer is one of NOLA's premier chefs. Don't miss this one.

Deanie's Seafood: NOLA institution and not expensive.

Keep in mind that most of these restaurants are definitely on the tourist track - they are frequented by tourists and locals alike.

For Café Du Monde, during the day you will probably see crazy lines, but if you go after dinner, you will never have to wait. It is open 24 hours a day and we find that it makes a great cap to a night out in New Orleans. Café du Monde in the middle of the night is a completely different experience than in the middle of the day.

And for even better beignets, check out Café Beignet on Royal

(We preferred Cafe du Monde's beignets. )

We ate at Boucherie, Commaders Palace, Muriel's, Luizza's by the Track, Brigtsen's and Clancy's; they were all excellent.

I think this is something that requires more field research...

You are getting great suggestions but also will be on many tourists radars. Take the street car up to Tulane and the zoo and walk around, very cool. Also try Guys PoBoy on N Magazine, the whole bus ride or long walk up Magazine gets you by many nice shops, bars and restaurants. BonTonCafe is only open wkdays and has awesome crawfish etoufee! Enjoy, such a soulful city!

You want a real non trendy place then go to the Farmer's Market in Venetian Isles in New Orleans East. It is a Vietnamese farmer's market and there are never any tourists.
