where to go in June
 

This is prob going to drive some crazy because I really have no idea where we should go. We are dropping our kids off at grandmas in Cumberland MD then DH and I have 4 days to breathe lol. We are open o anything but really would like to drive, no more than 4 hours preferably, could Amtrack if thats a possiblity..money isnt a huge issue ( expect normal hotel prices etc nothing crazy) husband likes history, eating,hes laid back. I have never been to this part of the country so no idea..any ideas or where to look? We are going end of June....

Philadelphia, Lancaster, or Pittsburgh, PA can all be reached via Amtrak.

Washington D.C. is nearly 4 1/2 hours by train.

If you have AAA, you can get a discount on Amtrak. Recommend you just plug in cities and see just how many options you have and what your preferences are.

West Virginia might be a different option. Though, it would be very laid back in comparison.

Williamsburg,VA? It's a lovely area and there are lots of hotel options. I've never been there in June so it may be too hot. We would always visit in late Sept. or early Oct. It's probably a few hours drive from MD.

Your question does not at all drive me crazy. I am like you and sometimes just want someone to make suggestions! We travel alot and love to plan but it's fun to hear ideas from others and just go with it!

From what you've said about preferences I would suggest a B&B in Gettysburg, PA. Very historical and a relaxing bit too.

Well, that's quite a wide range. 4hrs of driving can take you to Philadephia PA, Richmond VA, past Pittsburg PA into Ohio, and into Maryland and West Virginia. There's tons of history through the area, so you need to be more specific. A lot of auto self-tours for Civil War history. If interested in Colonial history, Philadelphia is 4 hrs away, and Colonial Williamsburg is about 4 1/2 hrs driving.
We once spent a couple days in DC, drove past Civil War sites on the way to Richmond and then Williamsburg. Stopped at Fredricksburg for the night.

If you want Amtrak, Washington DC is 3 hrs and 40 min (2 1/2 hrs driving).

The nearest beach

Baltimore MD is 2 1/2 hr drive and close to DC, Lancaster, Philly....

A little bit further drive perhaps, but I would go to Chincoteague Island, VA.

Life is short so forget the common things and places. Forget the "great restaurant" type recommendations, you can get them anywhere and they are very subjective any way.

Target the “only thing like it in the world” type things or the “one of only a few examples of” type things etc. for example a search of Kentucky attractions would soon yield: Mammoth Cave, Kentucky Horse park, Shaker Village, Louisville Slugger, Old Louisville, Corvette factory and Museum etc. All of these are “World Class” can’t get anywhere else stuff.

Where did you go? You can answer “went the beach and a charming restaurant in a quaint town with really nice people”
or answer we went to the only places in the world where… and stopped at the worlds biggest… and saw 1 of only 5...” I like the second type of vacation. Not to impress others but to know I did not just spend a lot of time and money doing a bunch of common nothing.

So get a map identify the max distance you want to go and start web searching those States and towns with in that range or a general direction. It won’t be long and you can find what “only thing like it in the world” stuff lurks near by or along that path.
