I realize that I'm replying to your question well after you asked it but my answer may help someone else in the same situation. I've been to Turks & Caicos (Grace Bay and Parrot Cay)- the beaches are the best in the world. The main island, Provo, is very undeveloped and there is nothing to do on the island that is unique to the island. Really, sun and sea is it with a good golf course. Parrot Cay is nice if you want nothing, and I mean NOTHING, to do other than sit in the sun and go to the spa. It is overpriced and the level of activity cannot be described as anything greater than sedate, both day and night. Just got back from Casa Del Mar in Cabo San Luca, Mexico. Can't rave enough about the hotel or the area in general. The hotel is fabulous and right next door to the over-priced Las Ventanas. Can't imagine staying at LV as the resort is very staid and quiet- "low energy" is a good way to describe it. CDM is beautiful, great rooms, 6 beautiful pools, excellent food and all at prices less than 1/3 of what LV charges. Had better meals at CDM than we did at LV (ate at both of LV's restaurants). We also visited Palmilla. Liked that resort better than LV b/c it was less stuffy but, again, it was very pricy and, compared to the level of service/food/accomodations at CDM, can't see staying at Palmilla. The Palmilla has no beach- just rocks that lead into Sea of Cortez. LV and CDM share the wide, beautiful beach but the water is too rough to swim in. Beaches are very, very clean but sand is pebbly and not powdery like it is in Turks. I'd definitely recommend renting a car as it is much cheaper than taking taxis and having the freedom to drive to Cabo and San Juan is great. Whale watching was unbelievable! I recommend taking a tour that provides a zodiac boat instead of a larger, louder boat b/c that scares the whales away. I also took a plane to Magdalena Bay to a whale preserve where the whales go to give birth and mate before heading back to colder waters. That was an experience of a lifetime especially when a mother and her baby came up to our boat and let us touch them for a good 30 minutes!
