where to go in alabama and mississippi
Hi, My wife and I will be traveling from Georgia to New Orleans at the end of december. We will have three days to do whatever. Can anyone suggest some interesting and fun places to go/stay in alabama or mississippi?

Depends on what you're interested in! If you're coming from Atlanta, you can go through Montgomery, and visit the White House of the Confederacy, and all the Civil Rights sites. If you're going through Birmingham, check the web for events at the Civic Center. Then you could head to Bellengrath Gardens in Mobile and tour it's seasonal light display. Then on to Biloxi and casinos, if you like. Does that help get you started?

You might enjoy seeing Beauvoir in Biloxi. It was the home of Jefferson Davis. Also there is an ice show at The Beau Rivage hotel. The food is good at The Beau and it is a very pretty hotel. I think the Grand hotel is offering a show from the broadway series during December.

Check out the 'Natchez Trace Parkway Nat'l Park' for a great drive off the interstate.
And in Scottsboro, AL - the 'Unclaimed luggage store', great bargains from all you air travellers, even some wedding dresses, those poor brides !

It's out of the way but if you can handle the time, head over to Clarksdale on the river, visit the Blues Museum, then have your mind blown at Abe's BBQ at the Crossroads. Spend the night at the Shack Up Inn (http://www.shackupinn.com/) if you're feeling appropriately funky. Imagine all this just down the road from casino hell in Tunica. Dif'rent planet, son.

Visited Mississippi last January on a long weekend. If you have any interest in the Civil War, Vicksburg is a must. One of the finest parks I have visited. Be sure to purchase a driving tape/CD at the park visitor center. We used the one done by an ex-ranger there...incredibly worthwhile. Mrs. MileKing is not into history and really loved visiting there. Vicksburg also has a few casino boats.
We drove the Natchez Trace Parkway. It was rather desolate. Would be much more enjoyable during warm weather when the trees and flowers are in bloom. You can pass on this in my view.
If interested in wine, try out the Old South Winery. If I recall correctly, it is one of only two wineries in the state and they make their wine from muscadines (sp?). This isn't world class stuff, but we liked one variety enough to bring a bottle home.
If in Jackson, I would strongly recommend Schimmels if you are up for fine (but pricey - $100+ for two) dining. Fantastic steaks and all-around experience. Make reservations and try for the booths for a more intimate experience. I can also recommend the Bouie House as an excellent place to stay.

Our favorite place in Alabama is Gulf Shores. It may be too far out of your way, but the beach is wonderful. Too cold to swim, I suppose,in December, but you could still walk by the ocean and enjoy the view!
