Where to go for single parent and son this summer?

When I first read your post, I thought San Diego. Obviously, many other people thought the same thing. Our son was older than yours when we took him to San Diego, but I think your son would enjoy many of the same things - Legoland (your son is the perfect age for this), SD Zoo, SD Wild Animal Park, Sea World and the beach. We stayed at the Embassy Suites in LaJolla and it was very nice. Big room with a separate bedroom and living room area (could be nice to have the extra room with a four year old). Big breakfast is included and evening snacks. They are offering some specials right now, but I can't get them to come up online for your dates. It could be worth a call to see what rate they give you, especially since you are staying a week.

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful trip with your son.

Thanks. Y'all have been a tremendous help. Now it's up to me to plan the rest.

Here's a rough itinerary that I've developed. Please review and let me know if I need to change anything...

July 19th: Fly into San Diego from Austin
July 20th: Beach or Sea World
July 21st: Legoland
July 22nd: Zoo
July 23rd: Wild Animal Park
July 24th: Tour downtown/Balboa Park/etc...
July 25th: Beach
July 26th: Padres game
July 27th: Depart San Diego and return to Austin

Looks like a great schedule, full but doable. What is nice is that you are doing most of the activities during the work week when they are least busy. Try to avoid the beach and amusement parks on the weekend; parking etc. will be more of a hassle when it's busy. It is best to do the tour downtown/balboa park etc. on a weekend day because it is the activity that is least busier on the weekend.

Sounds like a terrific trip - I love San Diego.

Has anybody mentioned the tide pools at Point Loma yet? I've never met a kid yet who didn't enjoy tide pools At Point Loma there is also an old lighthouse that you can tour - it is a small lighthouse so the spiral staircase up to the top is not very high. Probably a good choice with a small child.

Looks great bk!
Have you decided on a hotel yet?
I did think of the Embassy Suite in LJ but it was $189 a night..
They say to check rates at midnight on Tuesday when the airlines and hotels dump their inventory.
Keep us posted!

Now I'm looking at flights. Once I figure that out, I'll figure out car and hotel arrangements.

I vote for Pt Loma tide pools/Cabrillo if it can be squeezed in. Check the tide schedules and plan a hour or so at low tide to walk thru the tide pools. Cabrillo is a lighthouse and it is pretty cool too.

It appears that I will be going to the Bay Area instead of San Diego with my girlfriend and my little boy. Our relationship is getting more serious and I want to meet her family and they want to meet me and my boy. She's originally from the Bay Area.

We plan to rent a cabin in the Sequoia National Forest the week of Sep. 7th (after Labor Day) and then hit the beach (maybe Santa Cruz) for a while. September usually should not have fog on the coast, right?

I'll need suggestions for cabin rentals. I'd like the cabin to be near a lake, nestled in the forest, and have some kid friendly activities nearby.

I'd also like suggestions for the beach. Let me know.

We'll also visit the Bay Area. I'm very excited to be in the Bay Area during September as I heard that's the best time to be there.

I'd try vrbo.com first, I've had good success out there w/them. I also use www.sonomacoast.com, but they are located in the Bodega Bay/Jenner area. Can't help w/the specific area you are looking.
