Where to go for long weekend?
My boyfriend and I would like to go away for a 4 day weekend at the beginning of March. We are from Boston. We were thinking of going to Dallas. Would anyone recommend or discourage that? What are some other neat places to go? We've already been to Florida several times. Any suggestions?
|
Yea-Why don't you get MARRIED before you shack up????
|
Ok. You must be the first perfect person in the world. Why don't you keep your stupid opinions to yourself. A vacation question was asked by this person, not a morality question. Don't be too sad. Maybe sometime in your life, you'll find that special someone who can tolerate you.
|
Not sure what you specifically want to see or what your intersts are. I howver see nothing special about Dallas except for maybe to see a football and not in march. don't get me wrong, it's a nice city, but I wouldn't fly across the country just to visit. I'm assuming that you want to go somewhere in the south where you will have good weather. My first choice would be New Orleans, enough said. Second wouuld be, Charleston South Carolina and if you are interested in beach or golfing go to either Hilton head or jekyll Island Georgia. Give us more info and we can better help you.

It's about damn time someone stood up for what is moral and right in this country! I am sick to death of the immoral, irresponsible people in this country who feel they can do what they damn well please! I agree with the above poster--get married and then go on a trip!
|
Silly me, I thought there was a question here.

Pamela other good long weekends would be Scottsdale Arizona, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, any small town on Mississippi River and stay in a victorian or civil war b&b. What are your interests?
|
Hi Pam...I lived in Dallas for two years. Cool city with some fun stuff to do but I don't know if I'd fly there for a weekend. If you're really interested in Texas you should try Austin or San Antonio for your weekend getaway. Much more romantic and lots more to do! Have fun! :)
|
Thanks for the opinions on my original question. No thanks to the people who chose to bash me for doing what most people do before they're married. The only people's opinions I care about regarding that are my parents and they're fine with it. Please save you bitterness for those who care.

What we're looking for is some interesting things to do and see during the day. We're not huge partiers so we don't care too much about nightlife. I'd like to go somewhere warm, but that's not a neccessity.
Any more opinions on travel and not my my life's decisions?
|
The Cayman Islands...only a 45 minute flight from Miami.

Please everyone...stick to the subject ...travel!
|
My husband and I went to New Orleans for a long weekend once and had a blast!!! Really fun time, Las Vegas too. And thank GOD the Moral police are out there hacking away at our personal freedoms! I don't tell Tillie or Gramps which temple to go to how to raise their kids or how to have sex with their partners... yet I find it unbelieveably conforting that there are people on God's earth.. who are soooo superior to everyone that they must instruct us "non-moral, Godless, ignorant wretches on how to conduct our behavior..." Guess that Judge not that ye may be judged clause was only for a select few...hum???? So Gramps,Tillie where did you get the forms to fill out that make you exempt for that "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone !"
|
Pam,
4 day weekend:-
Bermuda
San Antonio
New Orleans
Las Vegas.

If you are interested in Dallas, go for it. It is worth seeing. So different than New England. Beautiful buildings, showy homes, good food.
Have fun. And as Dr. Laura says ........
|
Cheap packages are for the taking to Quebec City/Montreal during that time -- if you're looking for warm places, this is not a good suggestion, but since you didn't specify, it would be a fun and relatively inexpensive trip.

|
Fly into Phoenix and drive to Flagstaff (2.5 hrs) then on to the Grand Canyon.
Flagstaff is a terrific little town and you could always go back thru Sedona on you way home. Beautiful country
|
Pamela,

I spent a week in Dallas on business and found besides Kennedy museum it was not very interesting. In fact the downtown area was curiously dead in the middle of a business week. Definitely would not go there for leisure. I would suggest New Orleans, Savannah, Amelia Island, St. Augustine, or if able Key West. Hope you enjoy your weekend. By the way I got engaged at a very nice B&B in St. Augustine and really enjoyed it. There are many many B&B's in St Augustine, Savannah, and Amelia Island.

Boy, if I could choose any city for a long weekend, Dallas would not even be in the top 25. If you really want to go to Texas for a long weekend, I would choose Austin and/or San Antonio over Dallas. However, my top choice would be Charleston, South Carolina if you've never been there -- it is wonderful, especially at that time of year -- perfect for a long weekend. New Orleans is fantastic too.
|
Dallas wouldn't be enough for a long wekend - not much to do there - How about Colorado, Las Vegas or New Orleans, but if Texas is the state - Austin is the City - San Antonio is so close you get that visit as a bonus

There is tons to see in Colorado if you've never been- Garden of the Gods, Red Rocks theatre, Summit County - and lots of small mountain towns with great B&B's& Las Vegas - has red rocks canyon north of town, Hoover Dam & Laughlin
|
I would agree with Phoenix/Scottsdale. It'll be expensive in March. I would go see Talisen West because I haven't seen it yet and catch some Spring training baseball. It should be warm enough to hang around the pool. If I took my wife I would go horseback riding at one of the stables. If you want to make a side trip Tuscon is 2 hrs. south and Grand Canyon is about 3-1/2 hrs. north. You may even want to spend a night in Flagstaff. If you hit Spring Break the town will be less crowded and the hotel prices drop by about 30-50%.

No Pam, not everyone shacks up before marriage and commits adultry. Whatever happened to the 10 Commandments? Do you think you can throw them out the window and do what you want with your life?

Pam and all you who condone her behavior will wish you had not been so narcisstic and immoral when the end comes. And. believe me all the signs are there the end is near. Read the Bible and look around. I would be very afraid if I were you!
|
I didn't know that the Fodor's forum is a morality forum. Pam didn't ask you for your stinking opinion on her lifestyle. She is travelling with her boyfriend and she didn't mention that she will sleep with him. Besides, it's none of our business. She asked us a travel related question. Gramps, what you need is Viagara, you impotent piece of crap!!! It's people like you I can't stand.
Now back to the travel related topic.
I was in Dallas for a wedding, and I agree with most posters. There really isn't much to do there. I have been to Scottsdale, and it's really nice. Why not try New Orleans (immoral capital of the south) or San Francisco (gay capital of America) or Las Vegas (sin capital of America). Whatever place you choose, I am sure you will have lots of fun with your boyfriend. :)

Hi,
I'm Belgian and married.
For those who don't have a life, get one. And let Pamela live her life like she likes. Thought the US was the land of the free ??
Now for the real questions in life.. the tourist ones :
I was in many of the above places and if your going to texas : my #1 = San Antonio
if you going to louisiane : must go to New Orleans ( was there 3 time and can't get enough)
if you prefer romance "before" the wedding walk the piers in san francisco.

and by the way : I loved Boston as well, married or not.

Luc - once not and now married- but who cares about a paper, only the love remains
|
Not to get embroiled in this "morality" thing... but travel is so profound, often so stressful, so intense.. I mean hey, it's one thing to get up, kiss your husband, leave for work and then see each other 10 hours later for dinner, but generally when you travel it's a 24 hour a day thing. Why would anyone even CONSIDER getting married to someone if you didn't know what their personality was like "on the road"??? Seems like common sense to me. Besides I tend to think all those hyper condeming posts are coming from trolls anyway...but if there is someone out there who really believes that, they you should be happy that all the sinners are going to hell since that leaves way more room for you guys in heaven :)
If I were to go away for a quick weekend, I'd go to New Orleans, Las Vegas, Vancouver or The Grand Canyon.
Pamela, have a lovely time... I travelled with my husband to Europe just after we got engaged and found he was an excellent travel buddy..our 5 yar anniversary is this year. But I also traveled with a lot of people who made icky travel companions... thank heaven I found out BEFORE I took the IMO sacred vow of marriage.. which is worse in a zealots eyes.. divorce or pre-marital sex???? Hum... different forum I guess.

I'd skip Dallas if I were you. I've been there to visit family, but there isn't a whole lot there to see and do. For a nice warm place with lots to do, head to Las Vegas. I just was there a few weeks ago and there's so many new hotels and casinos popping up every few months.

As for the morality issue, I agree with the previous poster that you should travel with someone before marrying them. You see a whole new side to them. I have a close male friend that I've traveled with twice in the past few years. While we get along great in the states (people often wonder why we don't date), I can't seem to stand him on foreign land. He seems to get very scattered and is totally unlike himself in foreign situations. I've decided that before I ever marry a man, I'm going to take a 2 week honeymoon with him first and then marry him when we get back if I still like him. ;-)

Hey don't blame Pamela! It isn't her fault she has clueless parents who abdicated their parental responsibility by failing to teach her morals, values and character. Unfortunately, people like Pamela breed like rabbits and produce selfish, immoral and gutless offspring. But, hey everyone is doing it right?
|
Shacking up, Travelling together and having sex before marriage! Great idea! Of course there is always the VERY REAL risk of creating CHILDREN out of wedlock, getting STD's, getting used and discarded...but of course great sex and convenience is worth of all that!

|
Since when did this website become a forum for morals? Come on it's the 21st Century! Pamela just wanted some friendly advice on a travel destination and instead she gets hit with this crap.

Pamela, As for your question, like many of the others, I'd suggest looking beyond Dallas for a weekend destination. There's just not enough there to do for a long weekend. You can only eat so much barbecue and see South Fork for a few hours.

I think Las Vegas is a perfect place for you to try. It's got warm weather in the spring and plenty to do. So many great hotels, pools, shopping and restaurants. And there's nightlife to match anyone's taste.

Sedona is also a nice idea...depends on how much you enjoy the outdoors.
|
Speaking as one who was raised as a proper Christian, I can certainly understand the outrage that some of the writers have expressed on this post. I completely agree with those who came to Pamela's defense.

As I understand Christian theology, the religion involves following the teachings of Christ. Now if I remember my religious upbringing correctly, this means we should treat others with respect and compassion, as Christ did.
Gee, I seem to remember learning a phrase somewhere once, oh yeah - Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Soooo - to the trolls out there - you're not very amusing. If anyone was actually serious about their posts, I think it's time you looked at the good book again with an open heart and not let your interpretation of it be poisoned by your own self-righteousness.
|
Do people scroll here looking for a fight???
Pamela....Not sure what you want....
you hinted @ 'warm'. If you want warm,
but not Fla, then how about Bahamas?
If 'warm' is not #1 criterion then how about Toronto or Halifax for early March?
|
Pam:

What about the Florida Keys? Beautiful, fun, very relaxing, and WARM. . .also, you won't have to spend so much time flying! My second choice would be San Diego (if you're flying to AZ, it's only about 45 minutes more!). Gorgeous city and warm. Have a great vacation!
|
If Pamela wanted serious advice she could have left her personal life out of it.

She could have phrased her question something like, "Need advice for a long weekend trip for 2. someplace warm." She did not have to flaunt the fact she is shacking up! She got what she deserved!
|
pamela, if you are set on texas, then i join the chorus suggesting austin//san antonio. More to do, and it will be warmer than dallas, which beyond shopping and restaurants doesn't have much to recommend itself, unless you are a real museum freak and want to see the ones in fort worth.( i like it here, just don't see it as a travel destination.) Alternatively, I really like Houston _ good museums and theater, good restaurants, good shopping, just not as scenic as austin and san antonio. Finally, if you're not set on texas, try new orleans; lots to do during the day, plus great restaurants and nightlife. (my boyfriend and i travel together a lot, and we love it there....)
|
I think the adulturous slut has enough ideas about where to go....
|
Pamela, I have been to Dallas twice on business and didn't find it very interesting. Found a couple of good restaurants, but that was it. I agree San Antonio is a good choice, but also the upper Keys in Florida (Key Largo, Islamorada) is nice -- Pennecamp State Park is charming, and you can snorkel and see lots of cool fish and corals. There are lots of dive shops that will take out groups snorkeling. And plenty of restaurants, too. Quieter than Key West and only 45 min. or so from Miami. The Everglades Nat'l Park is also neat, and a good choice for March -- in the summer, too many bugs! Have fun!
|
For short getaways, we (my girlfriend and I) prefer places that are only a couple of hours or less by air, otherwise the travel time really starts to detract from the brief R&R we sought.
Montreal, Toronto or Quebec would be excellent choices from Boston. What you give up in the warm weather department is more than offset by the atmosphere, exchange rate and proximity factors.
