Where to go for family trip in August --price no object!

My husband was given a trip anywhere in the U.S. for his 15 year anniversary with his company. We would like to take our 3 kids, 16, 13 and 5. We want to go in early August. We've been to NYC, Chicago and live in Orlando. Resorts work well for us as we have a variety of ages and interests. And, we'd like someplace cool, as August in Orlando is brutal.
Put on your thinking caps, Fodorites, and give us some great ideas!

Perhaps a first class dude ranch out west somewhere? Or Colorado and the Rockies? It's great that you have this opportunity. Have fun.

Anywhere? Like even Hawaii? Because if so, I would probably opt for that (since it's free) than someplace cooler.

If you have to stay in continental U.S. - what about Northern California?

One of our favorite family trips ever was flying into Vegas, driving to Grand Canyon, Sedona, Zion National Park (Utah) and looping back through Vegas for a few days. My kids talk about it all the time! Hot? Yes, but not nearly as bad as I expected. Grand Canyon was actually cool nights & am's. If you have not seen it, you really need to!

Hawaii! What a wonderful reward for your husband. Your kids would love the islands. Congrats on the trip.

I thought about a cruise immediately but changed my mind because I automatically think "cruise - not in the U.S." but Alaska is a perfect idea. Cruising is a wonderful way to spend a family vacation.

Vail/Beaver Creek comes to mind - you can mountain bike, swim, play golf, frisee golf, white water raft, go canoeing, horseback riding, spas, etc. Try to book at the Sonnealp in Vail, Hyatt or Lodge at Beaver Creek or the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch for real luxury. There are some really great restaurants - think 4-5* in both Beaver Creek and Vail.

Cool = the shore of a Great Lake - Erie

Kids 16 13 and 5 = the #1 amusement park in the world for the last 9 years or so. Cedar Point Sandusky Ohio right on Lake Erie Shore. (cooler by the lake) Top Trill Dragster 420' straight up and down, 0-120mph in 3.8 seconds. Many of worlds best coasters + kids = yea duh!

Parents and kids wild and unusual adventure = a 1/2 day fishing charter on Erie

Traveling through to there or the way back = Cool temp Mammoth Cave Kentucky and maybe stop at the Kentucky Horse Park

These are great ideas! Thanks so much. I've thought about an Alaskan cruise, but then had second thoughts---norovirus and lots of age 50+ adults aren't so family friendly! Any more thoughts on the cruise idea?

I'm continuing to research. Please keep the ideas coming.

You are so wrong about the Alaska cruise! Most of them are families with kids. Plenty of my friends have done it and have raved that it was one of the best vacations they have ever been on. Also, part of the trip can be land based.

San Francisco and Yosemite National Park. The weather is definitley cool and there are tons of things to do! I think all of the kids could find something to entertain themselves.

Wow, lulela, that's an old-fashioned way to think about cruises. They're not at all the way you described. You can find some great cruise lines that go to Alaska that are not filled with the geriatric crowd. Check out sites such as http://www.cruisecritic.com/ for more information.

If I were given a free trip anywhere in the US, I think I would go for the places that would be more expensive if paying out of pocket. It would have to be Alaska or Hawaii.

Another vote for Hawaii - that would be a wonderful memory for your family and I'm sure you all would love it. And especially if someone else is picking up the tab! There are marvelous resorts over there and so many things to do for all ages.

Acadia National Park in Maine. Rent a house on Mount Desert Island (preferably NOT in Bar Harbor itself). Plenty of hiking, sailing to do, and did I mention great seafood?
