Where to go during Thanksgiving Week?
 

Hi all,

Dh and I are going to take a vacation during the week of Thanksgiving but aren't sure where we would like to go. We are in our mid-late 20s. We live in Colorado and would prefer not to stay here. Things we love:
B&Bs/Nice Inns
Laid back night life...sitting at a local pub and getting to know the bartender
Towns with a lot of history/culture
The ability to walk home from bars/restaurants or easily take a cab
Immersing ourselves in "local" customs or culture
The Battery in Charleston
Durango, Colorado
Dogs
Historic buildings
Beautiful scenary--gardens, trees, mountains

Things were aren't huge fans of:
Large, large cities (other than NYC), we spent our honeymoon in Honolulu and were really, really cranky due to the large crowds
"All inclusive" or overly resort type of hotels

We probably won't be interested in skiing since we can do that at home but are not opposed to "snow country". Any ideas? We've considered Sonoma/Napa/Calistoga, Vermont and Taos.

Hi Julie, Sonoma/Napa is beautiful but do be aware that could get have rain. I don't know if you knew that or not. Have fun deciding your vacation.

I vote for either Taos or Wine Country, CA. Have you been to Bogus Basin, ID? In add'n to the 2 above, is also great for 'the local pub', 'walking home', as you mentioned.

Vermont is gorgeous state but November and April are the worst months for visiting this great state. It is usually grey, wet, cold, windy. Come in October for foliage or wait until January if you want to enjoy snow country.
How about New Mexico or Arizona?

Thanks! I'll check out the places that you mentioned. We have a house in AZ, so probably want to try something new. When I was a kid, I lived in SFO, so I expected some rain...but I'm thinking Vermont sounds MUCH better during a different season. :) A girlfriend told me that she likes Cape May, NJ and West Virginia. Any feedback on those two?

You can get to TAos pretty easily in a car, if you can afford the gas. And, all those great places (Bandelier, the Taos Pueblo, etc.) are very close.
