Where to Go?
 

I'm a college student and would like to travel this summer. Does anyone know an unusual or obscure place that's also affordable.

One of the best vacations I ever took was volunteering on the Appalachian Trail Crew. You can't be afraid of a little hard work and sleeping in a tent. It was one of the most memorable weeks of my life.

The best thing - it's free!

Thanks for all the suggestions. They were all very interesting.

Hitch hike to Homer, Alaska, live in a tent on the beach and work in the cannery (Icicle Seafoods).

Drink beer and play pool in the Salty Dog Saloon, eat fresh salmon and halibut all summer.

The beer costs money, the fish is basically free.

If you work 12 hour days at the cannery, you're into overtime by coffee break on the fourth day of the week.

Build a sauna on the beach out of pallets and a tarp (use igneous rocks in the sauna).
Run like a screaming idiot out of the sauna and into the ocean.
Repeat.

Did I mention that you work seven days a week? You're gonna need that sauna.

It's a great way to make a pile of money for the school year.

Misery loves company, so after the shock of gutting fish twelve hours a day wears off, you'll make some great friends. The sauna will help.
