Go to the TKTS booth in Duffy Square right by Times Square for discounted theatre tickets.
|
There is also at 2for1 ticket box down near Ellis Island ferry entrance.

Discount tickets available at www.playbill.com
Discount tickets are available at the Tkts booth located at 47th and Broadway. Tickets are purchased for same day performance. Booth opens at 3pm for tickets to evening performances; 10am on matinee days. Only cash and traveler's checks are accepted.
Theater discount coupons. Purchase tickets at the box office for any day within a specfied period indicated on the discount coupon. Check at the Visitor's Center on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets (east side of street) to see what is available.
Novotel is located at Broadway and 52nd Street. It is very convenient to the theater district and Times Square. Also within walking distance of Lincoln Center, Museum of Modern Art, Central Park and 5th Avenue. Do a search - there were a couple of posts regarding this hotel in weeks past.

If you do a search on Novotel you'll find some recent discussion of the hotel.

Downtown TKTS booth is usually very quiet (compared to one at Times Square). It's located around Bowling Green (transplanted from WTC). Check out citysearch for exact address.
|
The downtown Tkts booth is located in Bowling Green Park Plaza which is at the foot of Broadway. To get there take the #4 or #5 train to the Bowling Green Station. The booth opens at 11 am. The 4 and 5 trains run down the east side. In midtown the station entrances are on Lexington Ave. At 42nd Street you can access the subway by entering Grand Central Terminal. If you decide to go there for tickets you can combine the trip with a ride on the Staten Island ferry. You can also explore the financial district and visit the South Street Seaport.

rqf has given you an excellent rundown on getting discounted theater tickets. The advantage of the TKTS booth is price--most Broadway shows that are available are half price plus $2.50. The disadvantage is that you can only get them for the same day and you have to wait in line.
The advantage of the offerings on the Playbill website or the discount tickets available at the Visitor's Center is that you can buy the tickets in advance right at the theater box office and you don't have to wait in line. The relative disadvantage is that the discount (usually the area of one-third off) is not as great as at the TKTS booth.
