Where to get the best rates for rental cars - Phoenix?
Hi, need to rent a car for a week in Phoenix next month. I can't even remember the last time I rented a car, so I'm clueless about who has the best rates, who to use, etc. We will be driving to the Grand Canyon and up to Page and back, so will be putting a good amount of miles on the car. Any recommendations for places with unlimited miles? Thanks!

Nina:
We'll be renting in PHX next month too and although I don't have any rental agency loyalty, I use my Coscto or BJ's discount and tend to get a really competitive rate (this year it's with Alamo, last year was Avis and it was Budget the year before that). All of them have unlimited miles I believe. However, other fodorites will tell you to use Priceline, Hotwire etc...having never used them myself, I can't tell you how good they are. I hope this helps. Karen

If you go to the Priceline/Hotwire message board below, there is an "Other Deals" Car Rental category which give a bunch of codes to use with various rental companies.

There are a few reported Car Rental "wins" there too:

www.BetterBidding.com

I hope you are not renting at an airport location. They charge more tax than anyplace I have rented a car except for Austria, which is ridiculous.

I know you can save money if you rent off airport. However, I have heard that if you arrive by taxi, it does not help. If at all possible, have someone else take you to the rental car office, off airport!

Don't know about Priceline or Hotwire, but what I've usually done is check Orbitz first and then cross reference the prices I find there against the actual company websites. While in the company websites, check under "Specials" -- you never know what you may find.
