Where to get hiking gear - in LV or in Springdale?
Hello all,
We will need to get some hiking gear for our Utah Grand Circle (and Yellowstone and Yosemite) tour.
Do you have any suggestions on where we can buy good shoes and other supplies (hats, flashlights and other things)? We will have one full day in LV before driving up to Springdale for the Zion Canyon.
Do you think proper hiking shoes are necessary, or can you do easy hiking in regular running shoes? We will do easy hiking, but would like to do the Angels Landing hike in Zion, and are considering signing up for a canyoneering tour in Moab.
We will also have to get a cooler for the car.
Is there anything else you would suggest I put on our shopping list?
thanks in advance

Even the best hiking or walking shoes take time to break in. I would get hiking shoes today, before you leave for your trip. Barring that I would just use regular running shoes. REI has a good selection of shoes.
As for hats, flashlights, and other things you can't beat WalMart, but you can find other things at many different stores, even supermarkets.

Forgot to add: We had our hiking boots with us, but I ended up just wearing regular cross-training shoes most of the time because of a problem with my foot that flared up the week before. Didn't have any trouble, except that I missed having the ankle support.

Unless you are doing some heavy duty backcountry hiking good sports shoes will work for most of the hikes. I would never buy new shoes / boots and attempt to hike in them the next day. Bad idea.
Plenty of places in LV to get the rest.

Don't forget to get heavy socks to wear with your hiking shoes.
Get insect repellent and something to put on bug bites before they become itchy. The sooner you buy and wear the hiking shoes, the better your feet will feel at the end of your hikes.
I buy my hiking shoes at Big 5 Sporting Goods (cheaper than REI and better shoes than WalMart).
