Where to fly into in/near West Virginia
Airfares into West Virginia have been pretty high. Where is generally least expensive airport to fly into for West Virginia? It can be in an adjoining state, but no further than about 120 miles away.

Sorry, I meant where IN WV are you going?
For example, Martinsburg, WV is less than a 1/2 hour from my home in Virginia and not more than 90 minutes from Dulles. On the other hand, the New River Gorge area is over 5 hours from here.....parts of WV are quite inaccessible with steep, curvy roads.
A little more detail will help people give better answers.

OK...
Probably the fastest and cheapest thing to do would be to fly into Dulles then drive into the WV panhandle. You can be to Harper's Ferry in around an hour which is also a neat place to visit (think John Brown's raid). Shepherdstown is also not far from there which has a nice walking area and some decent restaurants.
However, while nice, I don't think this panhandle area gives much of the feel of the West Virginia people think of....other options would be to still fly into Dulles then drive more like 3 hours to the Timberline/Blackwater Falls/Canaan Valley area OR fly into Roanoke and drive West towards White Sulfur Springs or the Beckley/New River Gorge area which is quite dramatic. There is a coal mine tour in Beckley and the Gorge has amazing white water rafting.
Good luck and happy travels.

Why not fly into the Charleston airport? You are approximately thirty minutes from New River Gorge area and Hawks Nest State Park. Also interstates 64, 77 and 79. all go through Charleston. I64 east will take you toward the Greenbrier River scenic area; I79 north take you close to Morgantown. This is also a very scenic drive. I77 North takes you to the Parkersburg area. I77 south takes you to Pipestem State park; into Beckley and Tamarak. Also in Beckley is a mine tourist can go in and see what work was like for miners. So my bet is for the Charleston airport.

If all you want to do is say you set foot in West Virginia, fly into Pittsburg and drive east on 22 to Weirton in the narrow strip of WV that runs between PA and Ohio. Or, fly into Baltimore Washington and drive east on 70 /68. You'll be missing alot to see in the rest of the state, however. For example, flying into Charleston you get to land at a small airport created by chopping the top off a mountain! Landings are a bit tricky, but taking off is a piece of cake.

Another painless option: Fly into BWI or DCA and take a MARC commuter train into the panhandle.
From DCA, you'd have to get to Union Station (easy on Metro) from BWI, you'd probably have to transfer there as well.

Washington Dulles airport is only about 35 miles from the WV border and another 5 miles to Harper's Ferry, which fun4all4 suggested.
Harper's Ferry would also be the first WV stop of Amtrak's Capitol Limited train from Union Station in D.C. This is in addition to the MARC Brusnwick Line service previously suggested.
From PIT, you could visit WV during a long layover. You could take a taxi from PIT to Wierton and back and get thru security to your gate in 3 hours or less.

Perhaps you should step into WV when you have more time to spend here. For you to only step on WV soil and head right back out is a waste of time. This state has so much to offer in the way of beauty, history and good, friendly people.
I still say you should fly into Charleston. And as Braunsky said you can land on our hill top airport. Better have you seat belt fastened or when they land and hit the brakes you could slide out of your seat and on the floor. LOL!!!! But it's true.
Really visit WV, don't just step in and out for the sake of saying you've been here. You just don't know what you are missing.

I agree with GadAbout. I'm not a West Virginia native, only lived in Charleston two years but I still miss it! I did have the good sense to marry a wonderful Parkersburg girl, so we get back from time to time to visit!.

I know flights in and out of Charleston can be much more expensive than into Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is not that far (150 miles) from Canaan Valley - that is a pretty part of WV or if you don't want to drive that far, you could be in Morgantown, home of West Virginia Univ, in less than 1.5 hours. I agree with other posters - by going into the eastern panhandle and visiting only Martinsburg area, you will not be getting the real feel of WV.
