I live in Providence, so I speak from experience when I say there are TONS of good choices in Providence. I would recommend going somewhere on Federal Hill (Italian section). Mediterraneo is my favorite. The food is outstanding. The Mayor of Providence is at the bar there every night. Also, if you're looking for seafood, Hemmingway's is THE best place in town. Everything is fresh and delicious. Providence is also the home of the original Capitol Grille. I couldn't possibly name all of the resturants that you should visit, but if you give more details about what you want, I can give more suggestions.

I'm still not convinced this is the best area. Are we able to drive someplace else inside 30-35 minutes tops?

I'll nominate Cafe Nuevo as a great place to eat. Save room for dessert.

If you are looking for something less fancy, the food at East Side Pockets (Greek/Middle Eastern food) on Thayer Street (up on College Hill) is not to be missed. I'd like to redo college again just for that falafel!
