Where to eat a good local lunch in Charlottesville, Va?
We'll be there for a day and would like to find a place that's NOT A CHAIN, has some local character and good food. Anyone have any tips?

Horizon, will you be in the University area or the downtown mall? And are you looking for a sit down lunch or sandwiches/take-out food?

If sandwiches are on your agenda and you are in the campus area, try Take It Away (115 Elliewood Ave, on the Corner). I still dream about the house dressing! You can take your lunch and picnic on the Lawn for a true UVA experience. Bodo's Bagels, also on the Corner (1609 University Ave, is also a C'ville classic. If you'd like a sit-down lunch, Michael's Bistro on the Corner is great and a cute place.
The downtown mall also has plenty of local options at all price ranges - let me know more details about your trip.

There is an old tavern called Michie Tavern where you can eat the wood they served when the old tavern was operational. The peach cobler is out of this world.Paul

we love Bodo's but one of my favorite places is The Hardware Store on the downtown Mall. There are also several local places on the main road between campus and downtown mall area. I think it is Main Street. DH isn't here for me to ask him. He went to UVA.

Really depends on food style...

I also recommend Michie's Tavern, an old colonial tavern that serves food from the colonial days. Not right in Charlottesvile but I think it is on the road to Monticello.
