Where to buy fresh shrimp and oysters in the Myrtle Beach area

The real icee was talking with friends yesterday who told him to go down around Litchfield or Murrell's inlet....Where? What time?

When we are down, we will be in the North Myrtle Beach area......Will they have the same things and where up around Little River and/or Calabash?

Also, GoT how did you say to roast oysters

We bought some fresh oysters and shrimp in Little River. It is not far from N. Myrtle maybe 15 miles north. Once you get into the area you can stop and ask someone where to go. It seems that I remember it being close to where the gambling boat departs from. You should be able to find this info from those tour guides that have coupons in it. They also have a web site for MB that might give you a link to Little River. Good Luck and good eating!!!!

Thanks audrey...that's where the real icee said the shrimpers came in...but, a guy at work yesterday told him that down around Litchfield there are people set up just on the side of the road....we never venture that far south..so I wondered if we should.

Budman, visit your folks around Thanksgiving and by all means come for dinner. We usually spend the week then for sure. And, since November has an r...we should be ok on the oysters!

We buy our oysters from Harrelson's in Murrells Inlet (ask anyone and they'll know where it is). Buy them in clusters by the bushel or half bushel.

Take large yard sized heavy duty trash bags with you to line; the back of your car, back of your truck, or your trunk.

Drive IMMMEDIATELY to the car wash right up the road and dump they oysters in the basket and power wash.

When you get home, leave the oysters outside. This is not an indoor event.

Take two or three sticks of butter and melt.

Mix equal parts catsup and horseradish for cocktail sauce with a squeeze of lemon.

Purchase oyster knives and several pair of cheap garden gloves per person. After you start opening oysters you'll know why.

Throw oysters on grill and cover with wet towel (don't snuff coals) that has been completely wrung out.

When they start to sizzle and crack open, they are done.

Take them off the grill with tongs and put on newspaper covered table outside.

Attack.

Enjoy.

Drink ice cold beer.

Let me know how they turned out.



One last thing, if you leave them on the grill too long, they will turn into oyster jerky.

Thanks Go..What kind of basket at the car wash are you speaking of? Is there one there or do I take one with me?

I was wondering the same -- assume it would be a bushel basket, and the car wash would be a "self serve" where you would clean the mud off -- great idea!!

The seafood store in Little River is near the waterfront (on your right just before you reach the waterway). We used to go there quite a bit when we lived in NMB. IF things are the same, they have their own boat, so the shrimp & fish is fresh.

In Cherry Grove, we liked Platt's Seafood. But be sure to ask whether the shrimp are fresh (you're coming down in May right? If so, there probably won't be any local shrimp yet).

There's nothing in MB proper. We like Independent Seafood in Georgetown--just drive North along the waterfront and you'll see it on your right after you pass all of the buildings.

Finally, we hit a little seafood store in McClellanville on our way back from Charleston last Fall, and their shrimp was excellent. In the docks area, but I couldn't tell you how to get there except to take the South entrance into McClellanville off of Highway 17; then wander around looking for shrimp boats, like we did. McClellanville is tiny.

We'll be there in March (Easter weekend)...what will I be able to get fresh then? Just oysters?

Then back in July and August..what then?

How about at Thanksgiving? Anything fresh then?

Years ago, we used to go to Rockefellers in NMB for 25 cent oysters during happy hour. Is it still good or is there another place..also, have done 2 places at Broadway at the Beach for 25 centers and like them also.

I am in Litchfield by th eSea as we speak (Pawley's) and local shrimp will not be available until May or June--BIG news to me. We go to Murrell's Inlet for seafood. For a good oyster roast (plain but good) Nance's in Murrell's is good. In the season, there is produce market on 17 bypass at Murrell's Inlet called Farmer's market. They have Wonderful fresh shrimp in season as well as produce and great New England linguica and Italian import specialties. Nice friendly place.

you'll be able to get oysters in March. You won't get local shrimp, as Gretchen mentioned. But from June or July through December, you should be able to find fresh, local shrimp. Oh yeah, blue crabs would be available in May, at the Little River Blue Crab festival!

Gretchen, we recently discovered the Farmers Market--just got some veggies there yesterday! They also have great cheeses.

icee, the oysters come in a burlap sack. The car wash will have big metal baskets that you can rotate to power wash the oysters (don't use soap wash).

If you don't see a basket, dump the oysters out on the floor of the car wash and spray.

The trash bags are to keep the gook from running off the oysters and into your car.

Oysters live in Marsh Mud. Marsh mud is very rich in nutrients made from rotting sea life and plant life.

You would never ever get the smell out of your car.

Thanks everyone! We'll do an oyster roast for Easter and then fresh shrimp later in the year. Come on over. Might even drink a little beer and do a little dancin!!!

Anybody else want to chime in on where to get the oysters to roast for Friday night while we watch the Wolfpack in the "Sweet Sixteen"!!

Leaving tomorrow after work....Yahooooooo, finally taking a few days break!

Oh, my GoTravel friend...We did an oyster roast..fun and good.

Bought our oysters at Murrell's Inlet Seafood Market..went to all three markets right there in a row and they were the only ones with fresh LOCAL oysters. You ain't just whistlin Dixie about them being muddy. We went straight to the carwash. Thanks for that great tip.

Used your recipe for cookin the oysters and for the cocktail sauce. Both were right on.

I made it about 3/4 of the way through the roast before I amputated my finger. Thought I had become a pro and ended up with a nice cut on my index finger. But, the over indulgence of cold beer helped to ease the pain!

Again, thanks for the great tips.

And, for those of you who wondered about the basket at the car wash. It looks like a 55 gallon drum to me that is expanded metal. Has a handle so you can rotate them and get the majority of the mud off.

Ouch! Where was your glove icee?

Aren't those oysters WONDERFUL! Murrells Inlet oysters are the best I've ever had. Small and salty and there is something about that ice cold beer that compliments them so well!

Creek Ratz and Dead Dog Saloon are wonderful places to sit outside and have a beer before you pick up your oysters.

Glad I could help you become an oyster roast expert!

Beer goes under left arm (long neck bottle), glove on left hand, oyster in palm of left hand, oyster knife in right hand, open by twisting 'knuckle' of oyster with knife.

Too many will get you every time!
