Where to avoid in SD??
I'm going down to San Diego next weekend and have never been there. Since I am traveling alone (althogh there is a friend who will be there the same time as me, so we may meet up at times) are there any areas that I should avoid??
I'm a native NYer, so I can pretty much handle myself but since I will be wandering alone 75% of the time, I just want to be sure to avoid the unsafe areas. Thanks in advance. |
Take the Old town trolley. A whole day with great guides driving. You can get on/off as much as you like.Paul

There aren't too many places to avoid that you'll likely to wander to while you're here. San Deigo has worked to clean up the downtown area when you get a bit east of the ballpark things get a little seedy.
Don't go to Tijuana, it's a horrible place. |
San Diego is a pretty safe city. The areas to avoid aren't touristy areas and you won't wander into them.

Avoid Tijuana, as mentioned. It's pretty safe if you stay in the touristy areas but they are tacky.

If you tell us where you are staying we can maybe help you more...

Staying at the Marriott in La Jolla. (Got the hotel on a Priceline bid, was looking to stay closer to downtown, but I digress.)
I should also mention I will have a rental car. |
The area where you are staying is great and very safe. You just hop on the 5 and go south to downtown. Across the street from where you are staying is UTC, a shopping mall that is pretty nice. You have some good restaurants nearby. Be sure and go into La Jolla Village. Great place to walk around. Good restaurants. Go down and see the seals on the shores. Be sure and try to see a Padres game in Petco Park downtown. Great way to spend an evening. And Little Italy is nearby there. Wonderful restaurants also. What a great town and I always feel very safe there, even travelling alone.
