Where should "Santa" take me?
 

Santa, aka my darling husband, wants to take me away for a long weekend as a present for Christmas. The question is, where should we go? We live in Maine, so we either fly out of Portland or Boston. Two places he's considering are New Orleans and Charleston. I've never been to either place. I think we'll probably go in March or April. I would love to hear any and all ideas for a four night romantic get-away. We like to walk a lot, eat at wonderful restaurants and generally sit and enjoy each other's company.

Easy: New Orleans. Some of the best, if not the best restaurants in the US. Great areas to walk in. And a good time of the year to go. Charleston is very nice but doesn't hold a candle to NO - and since you've been to neither, start with NO.

I love New Orleans and its restaurants, too. But, I'd opt for Charleston. I think it's much more romantic destination! And, the food's not too bad there either!

Have you considered taking your American $$$s to Canada? If so...I'd absolutely recommend Quebec City. Walking, restaurants, history, and ROMANCE! I'd recommend a stay at the Chateau Frontenac. Check this hotel out on the 'net - it's really impressive. I've been to Paris, and this is the next best thing! Good luck with your decision-making.

Another vote for New Orleans. Romantic, friendly and fun!

I too have spent time in Quebec City, and to suggest it's in the same ballpark with Paris is a big fat whopper. Boosterism is acceptable, I suppose, but lets keep it credible. QC has its good points, to be sure, so why not leave it at that - a small walled town with some good points. That hotel happens to be the focal point of the town. L

We've done Quebec City, Stacey, but we prefer Montreal, particularly for it's restaurant, Toque. Given that the weather can be strange in March/April between here and Canada, we thought we'd head south. So far, New Orleans has more votes, so I'll show Santa what you've all written and let him decide.

Good luck with your decision, Nano. How can I argue with the others who are suggesting New Orleans?...I'm heading there next week for my honeymoon!

Personally, I think your husband is just trying to figure out a way to get out of shopping, but ... <BR>You'll probably get oodles of info about New Orleans. That's why I'm recommending Charleston. It's very pretty and quaint. Try Carolina's Restaurant.

Sorry to say, but I put another vote in for Canada. You can get so much more for your American dollar. I went there for New Year's last year and it was so great. The exchange rate is great, and it gives you that small town European feel (Montreal that is). I would look into that!

Jim, you hit the nail on the head! Actually, this is the kind of present I call an "ulterior motive" present, one that, on the surface, looks like it's for the recipient, when it's really something the giver wants. I'm willing to let him get away with it this time. By the way, M, I'm going to Montreal in May as a chaperone for my daughter's field trip.
