Linda, when you say South Carolina I'm guessing you mean the University of South Carolina?

I spent one summer in Columbia for summer school and would never ever do it again. It is one of the hottest places on earth.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an alumni but I'd go elsewhere.

Duke is one of the most prestigious colleges in the US. I'd go there.

She could try to get a position as a page in Congress. I'm not sure of the details, but my husband did it when he was in high school so I can find out more if you're interested. I think you have to be nominated by one of your local Congressmen. He did this the summer after his junior year and still talks about what a great experience it was to see behind the scenes of the government.

While I agree about Columbia, SC is an excellent school (from a NC person, this is!!).
As for Spanish, Wayne needs to just look around!! I think that sounds pretty neat. In college our son spent a summer in Russia studying Russian in conjunction with Unive. of Indiana. Went back later for an entire semester.

Am I the only person who actually got a summer job in high school?

Parents, do you think you are overthinking all of this? I am nothing like the person I was groomed to be as a 16 year old. The complete opposite, in fact.

Just a thought, but what does your obviously intelligent and independent minded student actually say she wants to do with her time?

Well, right now she's sitting in there watching "Family Guy" LOL! I printed this page for her and she's listening to advice. I worked as a teen showing horses and selling lemonade on a golf course. But I also had a chance to travel, which changed my life incredibly. She has chosen to apply for a trip to Alaska with Habitat for Humanity. It's a lot of work, but they have some fun, too.Plus, she needs tons of service hours for her school, so this would do it. Please cross your fingers that she gets accepted. I'll keep you posted!

If I had a 16-year-old honor student, I'd hook them up with a several-week service project such as Habitat for Humanity so they could not only learn building skills but also how to share with other people.

when i was 16, i was an exchange student in Ecuador. I participated in daily classes to learn spanish, which helped me to eventually speak fluently. The most incredible part is the humbling experience of living in someone elses home, particularly in a foreign nation. I ended up wirting my college essay on the challenges of being part of a foreign family. It is one of the most important personal experiences in my life, and truly helped to form an understanding and accepting nature of other people, and learn about myself.
