Where SHOULD I post a relocation question?

I know that folks here often are annoyed (and understandably so) by relocation questions that aren't really travel questions in the typical sense.

Can anyone suggest a site that would be appropriate? The only one I've found is city-data.com, which is not at all helpful. A recent post there on a city of interest to me was "Dude, that place sucks. Everybody is on drugs, and you can't walk down the street without getting mugged. Everyone there is either ghetto or snobs. Anyone out there from such-and-such high school, class of '02? Go Tigers!". That's paraphrasing, but very close.

Anyway, I sometimes get frustrated by the level of some of the posts here on Fodors, but I think they're usually pretty reasonable. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

We've suggested a relocation forum on this board. Maybe in the future.

So, just post your question and ignore the complainers about the post. Lots of people do it and get good information.

hi Rob:
Although there are many other "Best City" surveys, AARP Magazine for Sept/Oct 2007 has an interesting article titled: "Dream Towns that are the best places to live now!"

They may or may not appeal to you, but the article might give you some insight and a starting point.

The 5 cities are:
Atlanta, GA
Portland, OR
Milwaukee, WI
Chandler, AZ
Boston, MS

findyourspot.com is a free and comprehensive survey that generates a list of cities it thinks are appropropriate for questionnaire answerer.

Then just ask questions here and ignore the nastiness.

Ouch! Why do you necessarily assume I'd be a candidate for AARP recommendations? :)

So, I'll go ahead and risk the ire of some of you and post my relocation question, but with a new title so that folks know the locale.

sorry rob: actually i assumed you weren't an AARP candidate at all!
but the cities they recommend are great cities for people of any age.

my thirty something daughter and s-i-l and 2 yr old grand daughter live in Portland, which is in my opinion a very hip and young town.
just trying to be helpful, sorry you couldn't use the info.

I don't have any problem with relocation questions being posted here. Fodorites are from all over, and many have lived in a number of places...I'm not sure that you would get that level of exposure anywhere else EXCEPT if a relocation section was added to this forum.

If you really want to get flamed, incidate you are relocating to Boston, NYC or Southern CA and looking for a big spacious apartment in a nice area for less than $600 per month.

I want one of those!

Portland is a great spot for all ages. I was there 3 months ago after a 10 year absence, and was impressed with downtown and the revitalized neighborhoods (really loved the Pearl district). Noticed new transit options, also great music and dining options.

the article sums up Portland, "European charm meets environmental nirvana." this describes it perfectly!

i've seen many posts here that ask about a specific city or area of the country that the person is interested in knowing more about.

I like relocation questions. And I think the US forum gets you the largest readership. We've often helped people moving to Seattle here.

You can post over on the Trip Advisor travel forums. They are smaller boards, sorted specifically by city.

Not that I read AARP magazine (yet) but personally I don't think much of their list. There are many posts on here re: relocation. Particularly to the Carolinas. I'd try the Lounge, you're likely to get less grief there. Do a serach first though.
