Where on Gulf to stay?
 

Just wondering where is the best place to stay on the gulf in Texas? Is Corpus Christi or South Padre Island the best to stay as far as the beach and accomidations and other things to do, etc? And if Corpus Christi is as good as SPI, where are some good places to stay right on the gulf? Thanks

I like to stay in Port Aransas which is just north of Corpus. We like sandollarsity.com because it is right on the beach road.

South Padre is the best resort area in Texas, IMHO.

I like Corpus, but most of the hotels are pretty far from the beaches and the best beach is the Padre Island National Seashore (cool place, but you have to drive a long way to get to it, unless you're camping on the beach).

I like Galveston too, but parts of it are too earthy for my tastes, and it is often crowded because it's only like a 40-minute drive from downtown Houston, so weekends can be a zoo.

South Padre though....that's pretty cool. A fairly slow pace, but popular enough that it has a critical mass of acceptable quality hotels, good restaurants (including a good brewpub), plus a Schlitterbahn park.

South Padre Island is the best, without a doubt, if the quality of the beach is most important.

Corpus Christi itself is on the bay, and as TioGringo said, you have to drive pretty far out to actually be on the beach. Plus those beaches are not as nice as SPI.

SPI is a whole different scene -- very small and laid back. It's not a hub of activity, though, as far as "other things to do." There are some pretty good restaurants, fishing, horseback riding, and some watercraft activities.
