Where is the best shrimp on Oahu

Going to Oahu for 9 days, can't wait! I've found lots of information here but still need to know where to get that great shrimp. Thanks for any suggestions.

My three kids would tell you it is Mackey's Shrimp truck on the North Shore. Heard great things about Giovannis as well.

I like Fumi's.

Romy's and Macky's are our favorites. I think Giovanni's is too crowded as it is the most well known but I preferred the quality of Romy's and Macy's better. I ate at all three of them in one weekend!

Suze, that place looks great!

We enjoyed our lunch at Giovanni's. It was busy, but not crowded. I had the shrimp scampi and Mr. Pickle had the lemon butter shrimp. We both got half orders, which was plenty of food.

I've not been to the current location but was a HUGE fan of Blue Water Shrimp when they had a food truck for awhile on Kuhio, also a regular shop within the IMP food court... both sadly gone now. Excellent downright amazing food at great prices ($12-15/plate).

I have some posts with picture of our experiences at the north shore shrimp trucks

Romy's:

Macky's:

Giovanni's:

There are 2 locations of Giovanni's on the North shore (Kahuku and Haleiwa).

From what I understand and read online, some shrimp trucks do not get their shrimp from the North Shore and they use frozen shrimp. I think you just have to do your research, but from what I understand Romy's is harvested fresh daily. They were all tasty though!!

Janice didn't say where they are staying. Seems most of the suggestions are up on the North Shore?

Staying by the zoo,but planning on having a car for a day or two. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have seen the Blue Water Shrimp truck before and was curious. Now I'm itching to back to Oahu for some garlic shrimp!!

One more question, what time do they open for lunch?

ChiSue Apr 7th, 2015 09:32 AM

Isn't this all farmed shrimp? Maybe you'd check to see what fish is in season during your stay. (Ask if it's local catch.)

janicecryc May 17th, 2015 12:00 PM

What time do they open?

ElendilPickle May 18th, 2015 02:18 PM

According to Giovanni's website, they open at 10:30 a.m. I don't know about the other ones, but you could Google them.

ChiSue, what's with the talk stink regarding farmed fish? Locals have been doing it for centuries

Ackislander May 19th, 2015 02:27 PM

Farmed shrimp, like farmed salmon or tilapia, have all kinds of issues, mostly having to do with what happens when concentrated shrimp poop hits the local waters.

It is possible to farm shrimp in ways where this is not an issue, e,g., combined shrimp and rice cropping, but I don't know what they do in HI. Probably import from thailand or Indonesia unless it is a local thing.
