Where is Mother's?
Want to check this out. Staying in the quarter...well, on canal actually. How would I get there?
I believe it is in the Central Business District. Take a cab. Don't sit down until you get your food or a mean old waitress will yell at you (I know from experience). That said - great, messy, drippy sandwiches. Yum!

Maybe you could walk? Anyone? We had a car but it was hard to find parking since their lot was very small.
From Canal St it is an easy walk. It's at Poydras and Magazine, I believe. Poydras runs more or less parallel to Canal and is 3-4 blocks up river.
We took the streetcar to a stop that was only 2 blocks from the restaurant. We took the streetcar and walked everywhere.... never had to take a cab anywhere. Mother's is a great experience, by the way :-)

My favorite is the "debris" sandwich - the pieces of roast beef that are left over after they cut it on the slicing machine!
mmmmm...Mothers Breakfast!!! I know its in the CBD somewhere around Poydras. There was a man there who resembled Elvis. He was hysterical!
It's at Poydras and Tchoupitoulas.
It's on Poydras, next to the W Hotel. Have the fried shrimp - it is delicious!

I have my Zagat's book hand for dining/nightclubs in New Orleans.
Mother's is located at 401 Poydras Street (between Magazine and Tchoupitoulas.) We were staying at the corner of Canal and St. Charles and had no problem walking there for a late lunch/early dinner. We had the fried shrimp po' boy sandwich and Mom said it was just like the ones she remembered when she was a young woman growing up in NOLA (and believe me, we had to down a lot of po' boys before finding that perfect one!) We had no problem sitting down and waiting for our meal, but it wasn't rush hour. I wouldn't recommend driving to Mother's -- take the streetcar to the nearest stop and walk a few blocks instead. |
Hello, briehon. Adding a negative here...Mother's was on our "must do" list of eateries for our recent fall trip. We dropped the place when a cabbie told us locals were deserting Mother's. He advised us it was becoming a tourist trap.
If you want to eat at Mother's (Moeder's) on a canal try the one in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Dutch home cooking!
It is sort of touristy, but the place does have character, to say the least. The only restaurant I've ever walked into with a drink in my hand! I liked it for the "atmosphere," but once was enough. I think my husband and I are the only people who weren't impressed with the Ferdi Special.
Have fun. It's all part of the New Orlean's charm! |
