Cruises over the holiday season will be at twice the price of any other time of year and are more than likely already fully booked up.

But - it doesn't hurt to check; you can probably get a good idea of what is available on either expedia.com or travelocity.com (not that I would book there, but I would investigate there).

sunny71, I would not hesitate to pull your kids from school for a week. Up until middle school we always pulled our son out of school to travel. We made it educational and worked with the teacher to make it relevent to what they were studying. Our son would bring back something local from where we visited to share with the class..candy, shells, etc.

Travelling during the holidays can be very expensive, especially on a cruise. We usually cruised between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Great weather in Mexico and it is nice in LA/San Diego area (I was born and raised in S. Calif.).

Cruises can be a great deal for a family. The meals and much of the entertainment are included. There are programs designed for the kids so parents can have some free time and the kids have a fun time also. Usually the kids will pay less than the first two adults in the same cabin. Carnival Cruises offers a good 7 night cruise to Mexico. Royal Caribbean does too, but is often more expensive. Shop around, it pays.

Whatever you do, have fun.

I live in the San Diego area so would definitely recommend that. The weather can be a little iffy around New Years and the first part of Jan. Could be warm and sunny or cold and rainy. But of course it will be much nicer than Wisconsin's cold winters.

A second choice would be Arizona as some others have mentioned. The weather is usually a little warmer than CA that time of year. You mentioned your BIL in Sierra Vista but didn't seem too excited about that. Don't know if that's because of the BIL or because of the location. But one place your kids might really like would be Tucson and then you could see the BIL for a day or so. They would enjoy the Desert Museum, Kartchner Cavern's. You can picnic and hike in Sabino Canyon. Don't know what your budget is but you could even do the Dude Ranch type of vacation. I have heard good things about Tanque Verde. Their rates include meals, etc. They have programs for kids of all ages. A desert vacation would be something different for kids from Wisconsin. www.tanqueverderanch.com/

We just got back from a So. California trip. Had a great time. Stayed in Anaheim, did Disney and Knotts, went out to the beach (Newport and Laguana).

San Diego is another great choice - with Sea World, the zoo, Legoland, beaches.
