Where in the Outer Banks should we visit??

Hello,

My husband and I are planning a getaway from our kids for 4-5 days in mid-October. We have never been to OBX and are thinking of going there. We like to shop (unique shops, not national chains), bike, and eat. Where in the OBX would you recommend? We are thinking that it will also give us a chance to investigate whether it is a good place for a family vacation next summer. We were leaning toward Duck or Nags Head.

Thanks.

Duck.

You should probably wait to see what effect Irene has on that area.

Yep - g$ is correct, sometimes hurricanes cause dramatic shifts out in OBX & portions can be (literally) cut-off.

Thanks. We are monitoring the situation and have not booked anything yet. Assuming that there is nothing new, should we pick Duck, Nags Head, or someplace else? What are the pros and cons of each place? Thanks.

Again, for the criteria you listed, Duck would be preferable to Nags Head. Smaller, more residential, "quainter" if you will. Nags Head can be better with big batches of teen agers or young adults as it's busier and more commercial.

October is a great time to visit the OBX. Fewer crowds, less humidity, cooler but still warm weather, and most shops & restaurants are still open with regular hours.

Certainly the events of the next 72 hours could change everything. Obviously no one hopes that to be the case. Seven or eight years ago (Isabel) there were pockets of devastation and pockets that were virtually untouched. This one sounds bigger as much as I hate to say that.

Duck or Corolla for that matter
