Where in Texas: Horseshoe Bay/LaCantera, Hyatt Hill Country or Las Colinas?
I live on the east coast and I am trying to choose where to go in Texas in May for a mini-vacation. Must be within driving distance of Galveston (I'll be there for work already). I can't get a handle on these resorts. Horseshoe Bay seems new and looks great from the web but there are no write-ups here and the tripadvisor reviews are quite alarming. Hyatt Hill Country looks nice, if not unspectacular. Same with LaCantera. All 3 are pretty expensive now ($250-$300) which is fine if they are worth the money. I want to avoid kids, don't really care about golf. Finally, 4 Seasons Las colinas looks beautiful, but Irving, Texas is not my idea of natural beauty. Any help that Texans can provide (or anyone else) would be great!

The Four Seasons in Irving is great if you are a golfer, or you're traveling with a golfer and you want to use the spa. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it as a vacation destination, especially if you are driving from Galveston.
Hyatt Hill Country and La Cantera are both in much better areas for a vacation. They are also much closer to Galveston.
I have no info on Horseshoe Bay.

If you really want to avoid kids then you could try Lake Austin Spa. It'll run more than $300 per night, but it's consistently rated one of the top spas in the whole country.

Both Hill Country Hyatt and Westin La Cantera will definitely oodles of have kids. The former is adjacent to SeaWorld and the latter Six Flags. For both the kid friendly activities are one of the big draws. Family trips to resorts like this are very common in TX. Mom and/or dad can play golf, the kids have daytime activities, and all can enjoy themselves.

Well, I like the idea of staying at the Westin La Cantera. If you like to shop there's a beautiful new outdoor mall, The Shops at La Cantera, just down the road from the Westin--I don't get excited about malls but this is a very pretty property and there are some good places to eat. Since I live in SA I haven't stayed overnight at the Westin but have been to the hotel. The views are beautiful and they have a wonderful restaurant, Francesca's at Sunset. The Westin is situated just off I-10 so from the hotel you could head north for a day trip to Boerne or Fredericksburg in the hill country. Or, you could head south and visit downtown, see the Alamo.
