where in maui? or where ...else
 

Trying to figure out where to go in Hawaii and having a hard time!
we are older 55 & 60 moderately grouchy,funny, private and really tired. prefer small hotels w/big perks [spa ] etc, ocean front, need only beach ,dinner, decent wine.
second visit....Thinking Maui....hotel suggestions [ will NEVER go in pool]...will go in ocean. Too used to business travel so a real baby about rates. Also am discovering all hotels have ocean view in advertisment pic! Am thinking chains will be all pool , play and am really looking to just watch water and locate remaining brain cells. Stayed in Kaanapali couple of years ago on last minute trip. loved beach, disliked hotel. but the beach front was steps away.
pls any ideas...

Don't forget that ocean view may mean just that--view only--. Make sure where ever you book has beach access some of them are on a rocky bluff.
Additionally, the book Maui Revealed that can be purchased at www.wizardpub.com and probably other larger bookstores has great advice and would be a good bet in helping you locate a hotel.

What was the hotel on Kaanapali Beach that you did not like on your first visit ?

You might try Kauai. Nice, quiet, sidewalks roll up after 10. You might also look at B&Bs instead of hotels, there are alot of great ones on Kauai. There are several good websites that can help you find a reasonably priced one anywhere on the island you want to stay. I've stayed on Maui and Oahu and although Maui has great beaches, you can't beat Kauai for atmosphere. We went last year in Sept and had the beaches to ourselves during the week.

We have always stayed at the Royal Lahaina in Kaanapali in one of their cottages. I know a lot of people trash this hotel because it is an older property, and definitely not in the same class as the Westin or Sheraton. However, we have never had any problems with our room or the service and the prices are very reasonable for the great location.

What time of the year are you going?
When you say you are a baby about rates -what type of per night rate are you looking for?
