Where in FL - 3 Adults/2 kids
My wife and I are planning a trip to Florida for January or early February, with our 2 kids (boy and girl, 5 and 4) and my mother (67, if you must know). We're not going to do the Disney/Orlando scene, but wondering if anyone had ideas for nice beach, some extra stuff to amuse the kids. Budget of $200 a night or less, and a week stay. Any suggestions?

Doubt you will find anything at that budget. At that time of year, its best to go to Southern FL for the best weather, look in the Ft Myers / Sanibel Island region. Plenty of beach and there is other stuff to do

January is cold for most parts of Florida. February would be better.
You may want to check out Crescent Beach. There are rental condos there, and you're in very close proximity to St Augustine and not too far from the Kennedy Space Center. |
Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at an NOAA water temp chart, and am thinking as far South as possible. Miami or the Keys? Can anyone suggest family oriented areas or activities?

I wouldn't stay in Miami with kids that age. Gulf water is better, IMO.If you can find anything in St Pete that's a nice family area. Trolley runs along the road, many fun small eateries. The kids might really enjoy Busch Gardens. Mine did.

Miami is great for your kids. There are many fun places to visit.
Evergaldes National Park has airboat rides which are best in winter (not too hot) Miami Seaquarium, Miami Childrens Museum, Jungle Island (formerly Parrot Jungle,) Miami Science Museum, Lincoln Road (in South Beach), numerous boat operators for different tours, the Florida History Museum, many parks that have canoe or kayak rentals, the beach, Las Olas . . . check out www.sfparenting.com for a complete list of thinkgs to do with kids in the South Florida region. Good Luck :) |
There are a few places away from the beach if you're willing to drive 10 to 15 minutes to save money... Ft Myers has a decent selection of hotels and a great beach and family atmosphere, but you are going to have to work to find that price.... consider a condo rental and cook your own food to allow more for the accomodation.

The Ft Myers area and Miami both have lots of choices for things to do -- good weather or not. If you will be renting a car or driving and you go to Miami, a trip to the Keys is fun for everyone.
