Where have the true "double" rooms gone?
 

I've noticed that increasingly, in B&B's and guest-suite motels especially but also in many of the chains, a "double" room may mean one room with one single Queen or King bed. No longer can you count on 2 beds unless you specify that, and I'm finding more places that have few rooms with 2 beds -- often in the "downscale" part of the hotel. <BR><BR>I'm guessing this is partly because of shrinking room sizes (esp. B&Bs in old houses with small rooms) and partly because hotels think they are catering to the single business traveler who'd rather have a desk with internet-jack than a second bed. <BR><BR>But for a number of us, two beds are what we need, for whatever reason.<BR><BR>Are the majority of Fodorites people who either travel alone or who are couples happy to share a large bad? What about friends who want to share a room but not a bed, or married couples who prefer not to cope w/snoring (and twitching, kicking, cover-hogging, unequal bed-sagging, etc. etc. etc.)?<BR><BR>Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone else think it's an unfortunate trend?

I travel with platonic male friends often, but wouldn't want to share a bed with them, so I don't like rooms with just one large bed.

I will translate. In hotel speak, a "Double" is just that, a room for two people whether it be a King, Queen, Double, or two Twin Beds. Now if you want a room with two beds that aren't Twins, you must ask for a "Double/Double". With a "Double/Double" you will get two Double Beds or two Queens.

Single, divorced female in my early 40's. Not in the closet, in fact have been dating my current boyfriend for 9 months now. Just have a few gay friends who I have known for years who I enjoy traveling with, but feel no desire to sleep next to.

(There's always someone)xxx, I certainly know enough HOW to ask for two beds. <BR><BR>The issue is why there are fewer and fewer "double/doubles," and whether the majority of travelers would prefer to have two beds or are happy to share.

Scorch, sorry, I thought you were asking why you didn't get two beds when you asked for a double. Most travelers prefer Kings instead of two double beds in a room. Unless of course you are at a Disney property where Kings are scarce.
