Where do people from Hawaii go on vacation?
People who live in paradise need vacations, but where do you go? We escape to Hawaii because we are from the east coast and like the warmth. (from the people as well as the weather) Do you go to somewhere cold to escape the heat? Just curious.

I do not live in Hawaii, but I was on a tour to South Africa last year with a wonderful couple who live near Honolulu.
|
Las Vegas is very popular
|
I enjoy Branson, MO
|
Las Vegas is very popular with Hawaiians, also Mexico, believe it or not.

We traveled to Bora Bora, Galapagos, Paris, Rome, Florence, Sicily, Prague, Krakow and Warsaw, London, Greece, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Finland, Iceland, Spain just to mention a few places
We live on Oahu
|
Alinka - such vast experiences! Do you mind me asking which place was your favorite? I've personally always wanted to visit the Galapagos.

Thanks.
I live on Oahu and love to travel anywhere.....with a special addiction for anywhere in Europe, as it is nothing like Hawaii! The only thing is, it takes so long to get to & from Europe that it requires me to stay 2-3 weeks. For weekend detox, a quick flight to another Hawaiian island will do. For vacations shorter than 1-2 weeks, anywhere in the Continental US is great.....San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Chicago.

But you do have a point, going to cold places is quite 'exotic' for us! Snow is a bonus!

Anyplace on the mainland offers better shopping and more fashionable clothing than you can find in the islands. Most Hawaii residents have family someplace on the mainland. Many of us also have family in Japan or in other islands of the Pacific (Samoa, Tahiti, etc.).

On the other hand we also have great weekend get-aways. We love to take a three day trip to the Big Island or to Kauai.

Las Vegas, of all places, has a large population of people with native Hawaiian ancestry. Many of them would like to return to the islands, though, if they could find decent employment.
|
Our guide on the Napali Coast tour said he's been saving for years to take his family to Disneyland.

The (local) woman at the next table in a cafe in Hanapepe said she spends a week or two every year in Hanalei.

My impression was that there are many that rarely get off the rock.
|
When we were in Hawaii lots of locals say they go to northern CA in the winter for snowboarding and on the return trip most of the locals stayed on the plane as it was going onto Las Vegas.
|
Las Vegas is the #1 vacation destination for vacationing Hawaii residents.

I go Honolulu for quick weekend vacations! But next week we are going to Oregon and CA for a 2 week vacation.
|
Yep, Las Vegas. I asked a few different people on Oahu and Kauai, and that's what they said!

anyplace cold

Kabul.

When I lived there, I yearned for a place I could drive for hours and hours. I really had that "rock fever" after a few years there even though we tried to get over to another island every few months.
|
Why, San Jose of course! (www.sanjose.com). It's where the world wants to visit!

Las Vegas would have to be the most popular destination, with Disneyland, San Francisco, and Alaska as very popular alternatives....For only $349 you can fly to Vegas and get 4 days of hotel and meals. To just fly to LAX costs more than that.
I consider Vegas a getaway, and vacation in more interesting places. We especially like taking our kids to places that open their eyes to didfferent cultures. Some of our trips: Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe (but it is such a loooong flight!), Mexico (the cities, not the beach resorts), Alaska, Canada, the American west (NV,AZ,CO,UT), and our "beginning of the US" road trip to Virginia, DC, MD, and PA; California and Oregon to see family and ski trips anywhere. We don't go to escape the heat, but do like to do our shopping on vacation...You can spot returning residents of Hawaii by the sheer number and odd shapes of their luggage!
