Where do I fly to in Hawaii??
 

We are in the very preliminary stages of planning our first trip to Hawaii. This might be a silly question, but is Honolulu the major airport in Hawaii?? Is that my best option for our round trip tickets from the mainland???

Yes, Honolulu is the major international airport, on Oahu. It depends which island(s) you are going to? I know I can also get decent non-stops into Maui (from Seattle) for only a little more than Honolulu.

Seems to be cheaper to fly into Honolulu on the island of Oahu, at least from my east coast location. Each major island, Kauai, Island of Hawaii and Maui have at least one airport to fly into. If you can't find direct flights to Maui or Kauai,for example, you can fly into Honolulu and take an interisland flight to your island of choice. Island Air, Hawaiian Air, Aloha Air and another smaller airline (the name has escaped me right now) all fly between the islands many times each day.

It is possible to fly directly into several Hawaiian airports, depending on your carrier and your vacation plans. You do not need to fly into Honolulu.

Honolulu, Oahu = HNL
Kahului, Maui = OGG
Kona, Hawaii = KOA
Lihue, Kauai = LIH

There are advantages to flying directly into Maui or Kona to avoid having to take yet another flight from HNL to your destination.

Linda, a little more info would be helpful. Where on the mainland are you or want to fly out of, and what island/islands do you plan to visit?

we are flying out of Michigan. As i said, we are in the beginning stages of planning and not quite sure which islands--definitely Maui and Ohau (we have family in Honolulu).

You'll probably want to play around a lot with this one - check for flights flying into Oahu and flying home from Maui, and then try flying into Maui and home from Oahu. If you are not set in stone on dates and times, those can make a difference too. Since you are interested in two islands I would not book a round trip from just one island. You'll have the added expense and wasted vacation time with an unnecessary interisland flight.

As suggested above, first I'd check out flying into Honolulu and out of Maui... or the other way around, with a one-way interisland ticket in between.

Secondly, pricing a round-trip Honolulu with a round-trip Oahu/Maui.

Those are the two options for what you describe.

FYI when you decide where you are flying into and then have to look for a local carrier to get you inter-island stay away from the new small carrier go!airlines.
If you want a horror story we were booked on the early flight the flight attendant didn't show up for work; the next flight was 2 hours later and no extra flight attendant, bumped from that flight, missed our international connecting out of Honolulu, couldn't find our luggage, etc.
They're cheap and as my husband said...you get what you pay for..buyer beware. Aloha and Hawaiian have competive prices now.
