Where can you still ski in April?
I am considering a ski trip for next spring break (07 if you can believe that!)I am assuming we will be shouldering an Easter weekend which I believe will be the first weekend of April. So, is there an area in our country or Canada that has good skiing, family atmosphere in April?
(Was looking at Lake Tahoe...) Thanks. |
We skied in Breck the week of Apr 15 several years ago. It's one of the higher elevation areas, so was still very good.
|
Arapahoe Basin, Colorado is usually open through to June--once I skied on the 4th of July! It's a big party (parking lot turns into "The Beach") once the other areas close. It's very near Breckenridge, Keystone, and Loveland, if you're trying to find it on a map; go over Loveland Pass.
|
Most ski resorts shoot for staying open through Easter. Obviously it's impossible to predict snowfall in 2007, but the first week in April is generally safe. Go as high as possible.
|
Lake Tahoe is a good call. Book now.
|
P.S.: Next spring break is in 2006, not 2007.
|
it is really hard to make any sort of plans this far out. The snow conditions just can't be predicted.
For instance - this past winter in the Sierra/Tahoe had a TON of fresh snow all the way into May. But some years there isn''t much after maybe late Feb/early March. The snow pack accumulated over the whole winter has a lot to do w/ how long the resorts can stay open. |
Last winter was amazingly good for SoCal snow and ski resorts. I went skiing in Mammoth in the middle of MAY! Awesome conditions, at least a 14 foot base and the weekend I was there it was 75 degrees in the sun and I skiied in a tank top and ski pants and I was still hot. And, I heard some people could even ski all the way until JUNE and July 4th! According to some weathermen around here, since we've been experience a bit of rain early this year, just like last year, people are thinking we might have another good ski season for 05/06.
|
Re the Tahoe area: We had tons of late snow this year but still along the middle to late April the places start to close. Most of them stay open through the spring break time so I guess it depends on what part of April you would be coming. Alpine Meadows seems to stay open the longest when there is a lot of snow. They will go into May sometimes.
|
Thanks guys I am just trying to get an idea if it is possible to ski and where. I will have to wait and see how this winter season is and when our break will be next year.(2007).
Thanks again! |
I have skied at both Vail and Breckenridge, Colorado in April.
|
My husband and I skiied Mammmoth, CA on June 30 this year. Snow was crummy, but it was cool to do in June. That said, the snow was still good in April.
|
you can frequently ski at Bachelor near Bend Oregon - I have taken my daughter skiing there in June - and understand sometimes you can ski even later than that
|
banff, alberta, canada - three ski hills in the area
|
Timberline Lodge (it's a cool historic resort) on Mt Hood in Oregon.
|
This one smacks of a troll post, folks.
How on Earth could anyone determine snowfall for 2 years out? And --- Pis was correct: next Spring Break occurs in calendar year 2006. Cut the crap, girl, and buy a calendar. |
Hey this I am no troll. I was asking for past experiences in this area for a future spring break. I know when the spring breaks are you idiot. My next two spring breaks will be in early April. Has there been a good experience with skiing somewhere in the Us in early April by other fodorites? If you don't have an answer to this, then don't respond!
So insulting. No one needs sarcastic attitudes like this. Go pick on somebody else! |
There will be snow at A-Basin, Colorado, in April. 2006, 2007--either.
|
Thanks Sylvia for your response. I get so heated when people are sarcastic and rude like the above poster.
Anyway, I am jotting down the areas named here so that this spring, when we will start talking about next year, and I will have some places to look into. I was just wondering if there was still good skiing out there and I see that there are lots of places that have it. Thanks all of you. |
I think I was standing in line behind you at the supermarket the other day. You were on your phone and waited until the cashier presented the total of your purchase to begin your search for your checkbook and ID. How ironic that you are now planning around the weather two years from now.
|
Hopefully, I took extra long to write out my check and made you late for your very important life. You are obnoxious!
|
The last word.
|
girlonthego,
Ignore the jerks!;)Us regulars know that you are not a troll.Good luck with the research..I cannot help you here.I have always enjoyed Wintergreen (though probably not in April)and it's closer to you than me. Take care ((R)) Christie |
The last word is Amen which I am sure is not part of your vocabulary.
Christie, thanks for the good words. This post is getting old already. I hope it gets removed. I like Wintergreen. It is very crowded when skiing. In April, the flowers are all blooming. No snow there. Oh well, I will look again later as the time comes. Just was nosing around for ideas. I am always planning my next trip.. |
girl,
I am the same way...always researching for the next trip!;)Good luck!My dad and stepmom like Vail,Colorado and Breckenridge.I would be terrified to ski in either as I have only been to Wintergreen.;) Christie ((R)) |
girlonthego,
I asked this question last year and got lots of good answers. Here is the thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34534706 We had booked into Heavenly at Tahoe this past April, but we had to postpone because of business reasons, so I can't help you there. (We're going the week after Xmas, instead) I also asked this question on the Canada board. I'll try to dig up the answers I got there. |
|
Hi girlonthego
Both Jasper and Banff National Parks in Canada have good skiing through April, of course someone may have already told you this on the Canadian board. Judy from Calgary can give you tons of information about both these areas. She is a regular on the Canadian board. Happy skiing! |
Thanks IVK and Atilla!! I appreciate your old posts ivk and your information Atilla. I will look into the possiblility for a Tahoe spring break or a Canadian spring break. I like to decide about a year in advance because I try to get frequent flyer tickets for some of us. (The perks of hubby's traveling job). I usually will call mid May for a spring vacation the following year. So, I am now sending away for info on the different places.
Thanks. |
Hi Girlonthego
Several years ago I stayed in Summit County, Colorado, in early April. That's near Keystone, A-basin, Copper Mountain, and Breckenridge. That worked out well. I hope you enjoy your trip and don't let the a$$holes get you down. :) |
I hate to add negativity, but why in the word would a troll post a question about skiing?
girlonthego - I plan my vacations way far ahead too, so I can relate. We're considering spring skiing in Utah in March 2007. (Next year we're heading to Utah in Feb., and the year after my kids spring break will be early). May you have lots of great snow and not fall too many times (like me!) |
Big Mountain, Whitefish, Montana NORMALLY has snow till late April. But because the ski area is on federal land it must close by April 15 so as not to piss off the Grizzly bears. Anytime before April 15 should be okay. www.bigmtn.com www.whitefishmt.com |
