Where are the NYC clothes bargains?

My 21 yr. old daughter and myself will be visiting NYC 8-1 thru 8-5. She is a fashion design/psych major in college and is really looking forward to seeing this city and getting some bargains. Can you tell us where that would be? And, what is on Canal St.? Someone said it is shopping? Thank you.

Canal street is for cheap knockoff accessories, not 'real' shopping.
What exactly are you hoping to buy?
Designer labels at a great discount?
Trendy labels not available in your hometown?
Let us know, and you'll get lots of recommendations.

One NYC-specific hint is to try to find sample sales. Many showrooms are of course located in NY, and they sometimes have sales to sell off both samples and excess inventory.
The S&B report put out by Elyssa Lazar is the 'bible' of sample sales. Some of the listings are at http://www.lazarshopping.com/.

newyork.citysearch.com,
www.timeoutny.com
and www.newyorkmag.com
also list sample sales. Why not glance through them and see if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.
once in the city, you will often find people handing out flyers for other sample sales on the streets of the garment district (roughly 28th- 40th streets, especially between 7th ave and
broadway)
Hope this helps

Thank you for your help. Designer selections at bargain prices would be great or even things not available in our area. We don't mind knockoffs either, so may visit Canal St. is it worth going to? We would love all the recommendations at least my daughter, Holly will. She loves to shop for clothes. Hope we find the garment district. We don't have a lot to spend but would be fun to to get a couple of great deals.

Popular places include Centyry 21 ((lower Manhattan, across from the World Trade Center) for all price ranges of clothes (from $8 tee shirt- Dolce & Gabbana dresses) at sometimes amazing discounts. Especially for the higher end items, you might have to 'dig' a little--the store looks like a very crwoded department store sale section. They have good shoes, and I think , especially good selection/prices on handbags. Men's clothes, sheets & towels, etc, too.
Daffy's a small chain that might be available near you is also good (moct convenient stores at Broadway &34th street across from Macys, aand 18th street and 5th avenue.

Trendier stores, most not especially cheap, are found in lower mNhattan--most of Soho is good for browsing, and Ludlow
street on the lower east side is becoming known for small hip stores. Definitely take a look at the shopping sections of the websites mentioned above.
They give great listings and descriptions of the hottest new places

Canal st. is great for knock off Kate Spade purses and coach bags, etc.. There are also very nice chinese silk jackets and robes, and little velvet maryjane slippers. I don't think those are knockoffs. Oh I almost forgot, great Rolex knock offs too. I don't know how well they work, but they look nice. Barneys has warehouse sales every so often, and they're great. Check the paper when you get there.

I second the suggestion for Century 21. Just make sure that you get there early, as the store gets very crowded.

Orchard Street on the Lower East Side for designer clothes at discount prices. It is near Canal St.
