Where are the good bagels in NYC?

I recall going to NYC many years ago (in the 70's) and the bagels were great nearly everywhere that I tried them. I've once again been in NYC regularly for the past year and been consistently disappointed by the quality. many seem a bit too hard (on the inside) or a trifle undercooked. When toasted, they're just fine but I'm still in search of the bagel that is great to eat right off the rack. I tried H&H (which seems to be everywhere) and even went to the trouble of getting some directly from their plant (near W. 45th & West Street) but still found them less than inspiring. Help!

Wow. I'm surprised this item isn't creating a virtual fire storm of debate. I'll take the first few shots. New Yorkers usually vote for their side in any poll.

H&H are West Side bagels, and when I lived on the West Side I was a devotee, although as a Columbia student I preferred

Columbia Hot Bagels, on Broadway and 110 or 111 St.

Then, I moved to the East Side and promptly switched my affiliation to:

David's Bagels, on 2nd Ave. between 14 and 13 (but only if you like them plain; the cream cheese etc. sucks there) and what I now believe to be the king,

Ess-A-Bagel, on 2nd Ave. between 21 and 23 or 3rd Ave. b/t 50 and 51. The bagels are crispy, chewy, fluffy, flavorful, usually perfectly cooked, and as they say on their sign, they top 'em with "Appetizing Cheeses" (and a whole lot more).

I hope this has helped, and I hope more people weigh in with their opinions.

I second the vote for Ess - A Bagel

Ess-A-Bagel hands down is the winner. Enjoy.

Toronto is another city where unending debates about the "best" bagel take place.

On a recent visit to NYC we at at Ess A Bagel and thought they were great. The huge variety of shmears and toppings were fresh and very appetizing.

Hands down Ess-a-Bagel: Best lox and cream cheese on plain I ever had in my life came from there.
