Yes, Art Institute for sure...with guided tours. Many times have enjoyed the Impressionists collection. Yes, strolling along lake front too. Certainly I must add Field Museum and then Museum of Science & Industry on far south side. Chicago (city of my birth) is tops in museums.

Frank Lloyd Write Robie House on the campus of the University of Chicago and also Oak Park walking tours of several Frank Lloyd Wright homes. Neighborhood walks, Architectural docent led walking tour of some of the wonderful buildings, of course the Art Institute and perhaps a concert at Millenium Park or theater.

I second the Architecture foundation's tours. They also have walking tours that go into building and places you can't see on the cruise. http://caf.architecture.org/

And of course I'll always go back to the spot where I asked my fiancee to be my wife...would never miss that!

A lot of people recommend the architectural tours along the river but we also really loved the dinner/boat tour out on the lake with fabulous views of the city from the water. They leave from Navy Pier.
