When will AA flights to Hawaii come down?

Hi everyone,

I am hoping to return to Hawaii next August for my first anniversary. I would really like to book on American Airlines, as that is where I have a FF flyer account. Since we took our honeymoon trip to Hawaii on AA, I would like to keep accruing miles with them, especially for trips with lots of miles like Hawaii.

I know it is pretty early, but right now, the flights to Hawaii (from Boston) for next August are VERY expensive. Over $800 to HNL, and over $900 for Maui, BI, and Kauai. Many of the other airlines (Continental, Delta, etc...) are showing fares in the low $600's for HNL and high 600's for Maui. Last year in Nov., I booked the open jaw for Aug. (into HNL and out of OGG) for $725.

Any guesses or ideas about when the fares on American might go down? I am hoping to book by Christmas, so I can surprise my husband with the plane tickets for Christmas....

Thanks!

To specifically answer your question in the title -- "When will AA flights to Hawaii come down?" The answer is pretty easy -- a few hours after they go up!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Cute, Patrick, I guess I set myself up for that one :)

Anyone else have a "real" answer for me?

Waaaaay too early for next August. Check back about March/April. Sign up for an automatic alert from, for example, travelocity.com or similar.
Good hunting.

I know it's early, but it shouldn't be too early...like I said, the other airlines are all showing much less expensive fares. Plus, last year we booked our August trip in November, and got a price of $725 that never went up or down for the rest of the year.

Anyone else?

I believe you can get AA miles for flying on Hawaiian Air. You might try checking AA flights from Boston to LA or SFO and then picking up a Hawaiian flight from there. Hawaiian has some great fares from the west coast, but I agree with the previous poster, it's way too early to book for August.

Definitely do the fare-watcher on AA.com!

Also, if you buy your tickets at the higher price and they do go on sale later, all you have to do is call AA and they will give you a voucher for the cost difference! I actually did this on my trip in May and got a $230 voucher!

ChristieP: Thanks for the advice, what a great tip! I went to the AA website and couldn't find the fare watcher...where do I go to find that option on the page?

beachgirl,
I don't want to be the wet blanket, but I waited and waited for the air fare to go down for our HI trip this past summer and it never happened. I waited so long we had not-so-great seats (but we had to have five together)

I have been told that in general airlines have cut flights to increase capacity.

That sounds like a great deal offered by the AA fare-watcher.

Oh, pardon me, it is a NetSAAver Alert. ;-) It should be right on the front page, in the upper left corner of the main frame, by where you make a reservation.

AA won't advertise that they do the vouchers, but thanks to what I also learned on this board, all you have to do is ask!
