when to visit North Carolina
When is a good time to go the Rocky Mountains in North Carolina? I hear spring and summer is, but I'm thinking more autumn/winter. I know Autumn is the time to go to see foliage, etc but it's a very busy time, with tourist, etc. How would September/Early October work? I'm looking for sights, to see something I've never seen, to tour, to visit, to hike, etc. I thought of spending Christmas down there but since the family would be driving quite a ways, I'm somewhat leary of doing that. Can anybody comment on what the weather would be like in December, in September and early October?

Do you mean the Great Smokies instead of the Rockies?
Autumn is beautiful with all the changing colors, but lots of visitors because of it. Usually towards the end of October. If you want to visit then, make reservations now. December weather should be nice, BUT there could be snow/ice. Probably not, but can't make any guarantees. Sept./Oct. warm to cool days (as the year gets later) with cool/cold evenings. The higher in elevation, the cooler it gets. I'd check weather underground or other weather websites to get historical weather information. |
Oops, I did mean Smokies ;) Sorry.
As for September or October-is it pretty that time of year before the fall foliage hits? |
Fall foliage season can be from early October to mid-late - Depends on altitude and rainfall. Usually not much color until 2nd week in October. Weather isn't usually too bad in December as far as snow - we sometimes get a snowfall around THanksgiving but more consistently after the first of the year -though again higher altitudes would have more snow.

It's pretty any time of year, except for maybe the winter months, everything is all brown, with the foilage off the trees, but you can get a better visual of the terrain around you, etc. I love it there in the winter, temps are not as bad as up north, I personally think the winter temps are quite moderate, but I was born and raised up north, and there is very minimal snowfall compared to up north as well. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

My vote is for Spring or Fall. Fall being my favorite. I have lived my entire life in NC and something about those mountains make you feel like you are a world away.
