Speedbuggy, if it's the same interview that I'm thinking of with Nagin, I kept saying to myself, "Why are you letting everyone know this?"

Thanks Mah1980, your response if very helpful and enlightened. There are obviously many layers in this tragedy that have dropped the ball. I just find the oh so convenient GWB bashing, whining, a very simplistic reason for the huge mess down there.

But many want to hold onto the blame bc it is easier than finding the solution, IMO. It gets old and counter productive after a while.

Let's just hope the country, the govt on all levels, learn from this and come up with a better plan for the next disaster...

Oh poor little Georgie Bush and his devotees. They are soooooooooooooo sensitive. And so resistant to reading or looking at anything that might contain a fact or an expression of anger that would rock their world.

I saw the documentary and what it does is give a whole lot of people who aren't rich and gorgeous a place to speak about what they lived through and who they watched died and what they saw washed away.

If you are the President of this country, you can't whine: "That's not my job." It is your job to make sure the wreckage gets cleaned off the streets and the people who have no home due to the fact that the levees were built improperly get a home again and their families are re-united. THAT's "family values." THAT'S patriotism. That's Christian.

Spike Lee calls the documentary a "requiem" because he has no illusions that comfy Americans are really going to do anything to help those people and that the ONLY truly unique and culturally independent urban destination in America (and I live in NYC) is lost forever.

And like who gives a damn except a handful of liberals?

nessundorma, shame on you. There were thousands and thousands of people, across every spectrum of this country who gave of their time, their talent, their money. I didn't see anyone looking for voter registration cards to find out their political affiliation. Ordinary people took off of their jobs, got in their cars, their trucks and headed south to give what they could. Children were emtying their piggy banks so send money to help the victims.

People in boats going through the neighborhoods seeing if they could get people out..and lo and behold..there's a white man carrying an elderly black woman out to the boat, there's a black man leading a white man through the water to safety.

Again we have beaurocracy. Millions and millions of dollars donated by everyday people, to the Red Cross and other agencies. So where the hell did the money go? I gave and give to other agencies, but especially after 911, I refuse to ever give another dime to the Red Cross.

I am so tired of people playing race and politics with these situations. I'm actually tired of all of it. I e-mail Harry Reid all the time and at least he responds. In fact his office has called me several times..must have been a slow day on the "hill". John Ensign? Well, he just give the "canned" response and a campaign speech.

People are always saying "the government should to this, the government should do that" like it's some separate entity out there. What people forget is the government is US, or at least that's what the founding fathers had in mind..."of the people, by the people, for the people", remember that?..so when we blame the government, it is us.

Just out of curiosity, and I haven't seen the film yet, but does Spike Lee offer any solutions? Or does he just emphasize the problems? We all know the problems, most of them. We watched them unfold every night on the news for months. But I don't hear too many offering solutions.

And yes, crefloors, we did all rally together and help. People from all over the nation helped house people. Even in our very small town in CA. We gave food, helped with donations, clothes, and saving the pets. We were all horrified.

We all lost something in Katrina. Our family had been to New Orleans just two weeks before Katrina. I rescheduled our trip to Nashville to proudly show my OD and her friend this wonderful, magical city. We met many fine, lovely folks, and all of them were on our minds when this disaster hit. I only hope they heeded all of the advanced warnings and chose to get out.
