What's Your Poison 9/15/06
What's your poison and where did you get stuck with the most expensive drink while traveling?
Since I am officially off work for the next month (at least from one job) and will be traveling during that time (some of it for the other job), I won't have much time to check in here at Fodor's and figured I would post a poison thread as I finish getting organized for three upcoming back to back trips. Tonight's question is courtesy of our very own Indytravel and we would like to know what is the most expensive drink you have had to endure in your travels? I guess mine would have to be a specialty martini at "The View Lounge" in Manhattan. It must not have been that memorable since I don't recall the exact name of it, but I don't recall it being bad, either. It was actually quite good and I'm not typically a martini person. It ran me about $10. Surely someone can top that, eh? :) |
I was "stuck" with a $15 lemon drop martini at whatever the boring, little lounge in the middle of Bellagio's casino (Las Vegas) is. No drink prices on the menu, I ordered as we were killing time. It was good, but still . . .
On the other hand, I've willingly paid $12-$15 for a drink (when I knew in advance the price) at various bars in NYC when going for the view or ambience for whatever reason. Some were good, some not so much, but I can't say I was "stuck". I have had one drink in the View lounge, but I have no idea what the price was, as I wasn't paying. :) Tonight, Maker's Mark bourbon for me, and whatever I can find on TV as I completely relax and do nothing. "Princess Bride" is on Bravo and may be just enough to capture my attention for a while longer . . . |
Poison = lemonade. I guess I should top it off with a little bit of citron vodka :-)
I guess the most expensive drink that I've paid for would be a lemon drop martini too. I order a beer when I don't want to drink a lot. A beer can last me forever. I could down lemon drops as fast they are brought to me. NOT a good idea! Happy and safe travels, Statia. It's good to see this thread again. |
Hi Statia. We'll miss you as you work "off-site" for a few weeks.
My most expensive drink was atop "Le Crayon" in Lyon. It's the Credit Lyonnaise building with a then Le Meridian hotel at the top, but now it's a Radisson. Stunning, uninterrupted views of the Fourviere hill, Presqu'Ile and the Alps. A Cuba Libra for my Dad and a vodka & tonic for me was 20 euro + tip. About 14 dollars for each drink at the time. It was the price of admission for a great view though. |
Off the top of my head, the most recent trip had the most expensive drinks- The Lava Flow on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was a yummy frozen thing that had a pina colada base with strawberry daquari coming down the sides to be the lava...:) MMMMM! I had several a day by the pool. The best part was the kids drank the virgin lava flows for a whopping $9. each. I was truly afraid of the checkout bill being outrageous because of all of my lava flows. It wasn't too bad. Anyway that is what vacation is for!!:)
I had a light beer and may have another. Good night all. I am up early for my girls' early am soccer match! |
You know, Indy....you just reminded me.
DH and I went to Cafe Florian on our last trip to Venice and aside from the orchestral charge, we paid about 30 euro for two drinks there. Of course, this was a splurge evening and we each got a speciality drink. After all it was St. Mark's Piazza after dark with the dueling orchestras. Everyone has to do it once, right? |
Sorry the alcoholic drinks were $10 a piece!!
|
Just returned from a few days in Miami and had a $12 Mojito by the pool at the Biltmore. My first one---thought it tasted a little "mediciney".

No poison just yet, but the night is young. :-)
My most expensive drink was in Norway. I ordered a glass of white wine and with the exchange it cost somewhere around $10-$11. That might not seem bad for Norway as everything is more expensive there, but this was the smallest wine glass I've ever seen. I think somebody took a shot glass, put a stem on it, and called it a wine glass. But hey, those 2 sips of wine were REALLY good.... :-( |
I've still never made it to Venice Statia. I'm sure I'll tap your knowledge when I do.
I forgot to mention my poison tonight: yellow, fizzy American beer. I just might have to fire up the Manhattan machine... |
Tonights poison, almost gone *hic*, is an Estancia 2005 Monterey, California Pinot Noir.
In Dublin, we felt so over charged by the hotel we stayed at for two pints of Guinness that we, dare I say, brought the glasses home with us. I've added it to my growing long list of reasons for going to hell. |
24 dollars for a small glass of Vueve Cliquot at The Shore Club on SOBE but then again now that I think about it, just about every drink on SOBE is way over priced.

Hi there Statia, probably the most expensive drink which was not enjoyed was in Florence Italy. Lunch time and my husband ordered a bottle of the local wine. The waiter suggested a very "special" wine that we would love. Well OK. Actually the bottle of wine was terrible. And when we got the bill, OMG, it was in Lira's (before Italy went on the Euro) and it was equivalent of about $80.00 or so US dollars or something like that. And we didn't even finish the bottle as the wine was terrible lol. Lesson learned, always ask the cost! My husband told the waiter we did not like the wine after we had a few sips of it..we got the Italian shrug.
A couple of days later at dinner in another restaurant in Florence my husband ordered the wine he had tried to order at the other restaurant. It was about the equivalant of $10.00US and it was sooo good. Safe and happy travels to you Statia! |
what was about the equivalant of $18 for a shot of Johnny Walker Black at the Buddha Bar in Paris.
|
Right now it's raspberry iced tea, but after the Downtown Mele I will probably have some Au Bon Climant at Chai's.
To be honest, I've not had expensive drinks while traveling. I can't believe it! My most expensive drink was a martini at the Cheesecake Factory. While waiting for my friends, I decided to have a nice fruity martini. Notice that the menus don't have prices??? Well, while sipping my drink, one of my friends calls and warns me not to order a martini....sure enough, it was about $9 or $9.50! |
A $10.- Mai Tai in 2000 at Mama's Fish House on Maui. It's still the top drink price for me.
|
Hey, off the topic a little bit - but I had fish tacos for lunch today. Never interested in ordering them until reading about this on this board.
VERY tasty. I'm glad I "discovered" them. Y'all are so helpful! :-) |
Good for you Starrsville. The Indy airport has had some great ones for a few years now. Not exactly what I would order but Jade the bartender talked me into it some years ago. Excellent even though I'm a beef kinda dude. :-)

Aloha Statia!
I think the most expensive was an $18 martini at 4S in NYC, although the occasional 100 year old Grand Marnei can fetch a hefty dollar. Don't like that 150 year old though!!! No, now wait, it could be that lovely bottle of champagne at my wedding table, that the wedding party emptied while I was greeting guests! Yeah, that would be a very expensive drink that never touched my lips!!!! a very long time ago. Good times indeed! Anyway Statia..... Band: O Positive Song: With You Album: Only Breathing mrlou loved playing this for me when I smoked.....he still loves playing it and doing a little airguitar which I have renamed bellyguitar!!! Check it out my VFemmeFan!!! Poison: a splash of rasberry vodka, a splash of blueberry vodka, a pour of seltzer and lots of ice..... |
Hi Statia:
No poison tonight, just some diet Coke. The most expensive drink was about 4 years ago at the Hotel Danieli: €17 for a Cosmopolitan. Expensive but worth every eurocent!! MY |
