Since I do the grocery shopping and there's only two of us, I'm usually "at market" every other day keeepin' it fresh...I usually keep an eye open for LOLs (Little Old Ladies) looking up at the top shevles for items then assist if need be as well as someone using the elec shopping cart/chair at the dairy case/upper shelves.

It seems like when I do something like this, within a few days my Mom or late Father (Happy Vet's Day, Pops) would call me up and tell me how some nice young gentleman helped with a flat tire, helped roll out their trash ,etc.
"Karma" it's not just for apples anymore.:)>-

As for travels, helping out tourists in SF, Chicago, etc then when we were in Paris, Rome and Venice we got great treatment from locals, mostly volunteered, too, who could tell we probably needed assistance with directions.

The funniest was a Parisian artist who gave us a crash course in the Fr Franc!
He showed us what coin meant what/US Dollar equivilent and it was like a ((I))went off in our heads.

BTW...CONGRATS P_M...NOW GET TO WORK!!!!!!!! Will you be able to post at work? :-?

Kal, you remind me so much of my own DH, and not just for helping little old ladies in the supermarket. He also is the one who "keeps it fresh" and does most of the shopping while he is helping those ladies. And, he actually had the gall to say to me the other night, "As Kal would say....where's my Effin Vodka!" :D

Travgina, your post reminded me of the last time DH and I left the Latin Quarter on the RER to CDG very early in the morning in Paris. In our haste we got on the wrong train and a very nice, elderly Parisian man tried his best to let us know we were on the wrong train when he noticed our carry-on luggage. Between his broken English and our broken French, we knew our mistake and he was so nice about helping us to find the right train to get on thereafter. Something he totally did not have to go out of his way to do. Needless to say, we made it in time for our flight.

Sorry to hear about your mom and her mobility problems. Only you can make the call about Rome.

The last trip we took with Mom was to Disneyworld with the grandkids. (The niece and nephew I took to Europe in 2001.) They were 4 & 5 and barely remember it. My mom struggled on the trip but remembered it until she died.

I like your random act of kindness too. I live near a good sized staging area for the war, Camp Atterbury. I'm often in the local grocery store in line with people from the military. I always, always take the time to thank them for their efforts. Most are a little embarrassed by the attention but I think they appreciate it.

Kal, forgive my spelling mistake, since I'm not a big vodka afficianado like my DH is. Actually that whole exchange came up when we were talking about which vokda would make the best limoncello.

I had to tell him your grocery store reference to Mrs. Kal's trip. His response? Tell Kal I said, "Can I have an Amen!" :D

Indy, that is so nice of you. I also try to thank any military person when I see them (not that I see them here, but when I'm in the US). I will admit, however, that I am sometimes a bit shy to say something and often regret it later.

Hi Statia! Hi everyone!

Poison for me tonight is a shot of Tylenol severe cold & flu washing down two advils. :( The cold I've been ignoring all week is finally catching up with me. Guess I shoulda rested more.

I'm a big fan of random acts of kindness on a small scale, daily basis. I try to help people I encounter if I can.

In my travels I've been helped my fair share by kind locals too. The particular one that comes to mind was in the subway in Rome. My best friend and I were at a loss for why the machine wouldn't dispense our tickets for us...we tried over and over following the steps in the little bit of Italian we could understand. Finally, a kind stranger pointed out some words on the screen & explained that it said the machine was out of order! We were "Stupid Americans" more than a few times on that trip...but people always helped us!

I'd go out of my way to help someone in need given the chance.

In reference to Kal's fave vodka, I'd like to now ask, "Where's my Effen Hearing?" I have only ventured out on my patio a few times tonight and I feel the tinitus setting in more with each venture. My GOSH, where do these people get their love for loud music. I like it as loud as the next guy, but this will put a Stones concert to shame. I have a feeling I will be fully deaf before my head hits the hay...which will unfortunately be much later than I would like. The joys of living in "downtown Statia"....all four blocks of it ;)

Tried to talk to my sister, IN MY HOUSE, regarding the apartment that we are trying to set up for a surprise trip to Rome for our mom. Could hardly hear one another and finally gave up.

Gotta love the Statia-America Day celebrations....thank goodness it only comes once a year and lasts for only a week. :)
