My favorite:

In case of a "water landing"

It's amazing what pops up every now and again.

Way back when I noted 'sanitary landfill' (I think it's #36 on the list) I thought it was funny (still do). However, someone told me it is a technical term so it is correct. In the same catagory as 'jumbo shrimp' just seems funny to me.

Come on down to South AL...Jumbo shrimp abound!! Belle

We have a TV weatherman that oftens says, "It's raining, but it's evaporating before it hits the ground." Is rain that never hits the ground still rain, or is it some sort of oxymoron?

Renee Jul 27th, 2005 11:28 AM

Someone may have already said this but "Relaxing Vacation" is my pick.

Not exactly an oxymoron, but how about the sign that appears on any major highway... FOOD LODGING. Good thing I know the Heimlich Maneuver!

sylvia3 Jul 27th, 2005 12:18 PM

rain that doesn't hit the ground is verga.

dwooddon Jul 27th, 2005 12:26 PM

This is a bit nit-picky but rain that evaporates before it hits the ground is virga, not verga.

We see quite a lot of it here in Nevada on hot, thunder-stormy days along the mountain slopes.

virga--I hang my head in shame. Nit-picky to correct bad spelling? Not in the least! (But I was close...)

Any restaurant that advertises "HOME made food" Right, I made it at home this morning and brought it in.

I'm always amused by "Free Range" chicken or beef.

If they were free then how did it end up on my plate?

"Almost Free Range" maybe but not quite free.

Homemade -- that's why I left home. ((a)) ((b))
