whats your favorite mexican restaurant in Scottsdale area?
Four "girls" from suburban Indianapolis, spending a weekend in Scottsdale are looking for a great Mexican place- casual, more hole-in-the-wall than fancy for lunch. Emphasis on food, not atmosphere. What's your favorite?

Depends on your defination of Mexican. If you mean gringo mexican, probably Arriba's or Carlos O'Brien's. If you're looking for real mexican taco's, Guedo's in Tempe or Chandler. If you're looking for really outstanding Central Mexican food (mole's, adobado, etc.) you will not find better than Los Sombreros. If hot is the operative word, the choice would be Los dos Sombreros, but only the downtown Phoenix location will fit your "fun" requirement (the mesa location is strip mall blah and I don't find the food to be as good). New Mexican type? My vote goes for Carlsbad Tavern. Locals will invariably choose Los Sombreros. Period. But all these choices are good food, and fun places, clean and enjoyable.

If you like hot food, I would go to Los Dos Molinos. There are a couple of different locations. Very good, very casual, but VERY hot! Here is a link to their website:

Great place if you like New Mexican extremely spicy - Richardsons, 1582 E. Bethany Home Road - nice atmosphere in a little strip mall in east Phoenix.

I would second the vote for Carlsbad Tavern.....while not really Mexican food, it is really good southwest food, you can sit outside and the atmosphere is good.....very casual.......Mexican food, I would probably pick Macayo or Julio G's.........both casual, as are most places here.

Unfortuantely, I am sad to report that we locals have been disappointed recently in Carlsbad Tavern. I fear it is on a downhill alert, which makes me sad as I've always liked and recommended the place. Macayo's is similar to what you can get anywhere - nothing special, pure gringo mexican. I've never been to Richardson's at lunch, but at dinner the food is quite good, but the place has a large bar contingent and no non-smoking section, making it loud and smoky.

We are Indy girls- total gringos. Our favorite local restaurant is a little Mexican place but I'm sure it is veeerrrry mild in comparison with what is available in AZ. So I guess we are looking for gringo style Mexican, not spicy but no chain type restaurants...

I'd still recommend Los Sombreros first. It's not overly spicy at all, but delicious. However, if you really want to stay with the standard dishes (tacos, enchilada's, fajita's, etc.) consider Arriba or Julio G's. Both are local chains, but not decked out as chains. Another good one is Via de los Santos - 44 different kinds of Tequila and darn good food. Macayo's would be a distant fourth choice.
