what's up with acccuweather's prediction?
 

Has anyone seen accuweather's predicted path for Hurricane Jeanne? They're saying it's going to go on a diagonal path from South Florida across the state to the panhandle. That's totally different from what others are saying.

Anyone know why? And whether there's any validity to it?

From my understanding, Ivan is going to make a U turn and head south about the same time Jeanne is trying to head north. Ivan will keep Jeanne from heading any more north than Jacksonville Florida.

What do Ivan and Jeanne think this is? A universal dance? They should take their flirtatious mingling some place else. :)

Although I think Accuweather is correct in this instance, I find that their forecasts particularly for Connecticut where I live are consistently inaccurate compared to the Weather Channel's site Weather.com.

I agree with Craig! Accuweather is inaccurate.

Interesting. The "Ivan U-Turn Theory" seems strange. I don't think I've ever heard of a weather system going north-south on the eastern seaboard.

Should they rename it InaccuWeather? (BTW, Craig, why do you think Inacc... er, uh, Accuweather is accurate in this instance? Do you subscribe to the Ivan U-Turn Theory?

I reread your post k_999_9 and I see that it says Accuweather is totally different from what the others are saying. The others are saying that Jeanne is being blocked by Ivan from going very far north but are not predicting the direction of Jeanne after she hits Florida. So maybe I'm only in partial agreement if that makes any sense. I don't think that this is a u-turn.

I can relate one story regarding Accuweather.

A few years ago here in Hawaii, one of the news channels (that use Accuweather, the others don't) predicted a hurricane heading for Hawaii. The others were saying it would miss us. Needless to say, there was a lot of confusion among the populace and caused quite a stir.

Anyway, it never hit Hawaii. I don't know if that station still uses Accuweather.

Hurricanes do indeed turn around and go backwards.

In 1985 Hurricane Bob passed us and in the middle of the night, it made a U turn and came back toward us.

I was on Pawleys Island at the time and the police came around in the middle of the night to evacuate us.

For the record, many of the models have Ivan doing a U turn not just accuweather.

And, of course, there are always freaky things like "Left Handed Lenny." First and only storm in history to develop in the west and head east. That one sat stationary over us for nearly 72 hours.

My guests from Minnesota were pretty much fed up with "being in jail" after the first 24. :D
