what's there to do in oklahoma?

we are attending a basic training graduation at Fort Sill. What is there interesting to do in the Lawton-OKLAHOMA city area? Can anyone suggest a nice place to stay while in the area? Any help would be appreciated.

Patty, <BR> <BR>I don't have a lot of information to give you, but I will let you know what I have. We spent a long weekend in Oklahoma City back in the Fall due to a soccer tournament my son was in. We enjoyed downtown OK City. There is a new (and still expanding) area.... I believe it's called Bricktown. Perhaps someone else can tell you for sure. It's a small, but pleasant area. Of course, we took the boys to the memorial of the OK City bombing. That was a very somber and touching moment. We found several delightful places to eat.... I'm so sorry that I can't remember the names of any. We found that your $ goes a long way there. We stayed at a wonderful, brand new suite hotel for $65 a night that compared to places we have easily paid $125 a night for. Once again, I am so sorry that I can't remember the name of the hotel. One of the other mom's made all the reservations for our team. We spent most of our time at the soccer field, but the little entertainment we took in outside of soccer was great. I don't know how good it is now, but many years go (perhaps 17 or so) they had a very nice zoo that we enjoyed when we were in town for a softball tournament. Sorry it wasn't much, but perhaps this will get your thread going. Anybody out there from OK City that can help Patty......

TORNADOS! <BR>Lots of 'em! <BR>Big 'uns, too! <BR>"Go to Oklahoma and you'll be blown away!"

To add to the first post; see the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Botanical Gardens. Bricktown has lots of restaurants. The zoo is great and also the Kirkpatrick Center which is near the zoo and Cowboy Hall of Fame. Near Ft. Sill is the Wichita Mountains wildlife preserve if you like hiking, etc. What time of year are you coming? The best event of the year is the annual Festival of the Arts held in downtown OKC dates are April 25th thru 30th this year.

we will be in the area for an August 17th graduation. do you have a favorite place to stay?

Patty, <BR> <BR>For lodging, visit www.lawtonok.com. In and around Lawton, visit Mt. Scott, Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and the Meers Restaurant and Store. There are lots of Native American attractions in nearby Anadarko.

Hope I'm not too late to give you information on Oklahoma City! Check out www.okccvb.org and see all the new stuff...museums...restaurants..lots to do and see! There is nothing to do in OK. <BR>Stay where you are.

Either you have never been to Oklahoma or you have an very narrow definition of &quot;things to do&quot;. Stop being so rude and close-minded.

islandmom Jun 7th, 2003 02:54 PM

My friend all travel to Lawton to go hiking in some famous area. I'm sure it's on those websites.

islandmom Jun 7th, 2003 03:01 PM

Here are my picks-

Bricktown- food, entertainment, boats, carriage rides
Memorial
Zoo
Omni-plex
Myrid Gardens
Penn Square Mall
Bahama Breeze
Ted's Mexican
And how can you skip Sonic ; )

National History Museum in Norman
Stop by La Baugette (spelling?) for pastries. Have lunch at the Mont. Stroll the campus shops. Have a yard-long beer at Brothers.

See a musical?

Sorry! Couldn't resist!! lol

Actually, Sarcastic Sheryl, you can see a musical in OKC. Chicago is currently playing at Lyric Theatre in the Civic Center Music Hall, as well as Forever Plaid. They will also be presenting Footloose, and two others I can't remember. There is also Jewel Box Theatre, which does two musicals each summer in an outdoor theatre. In the last year we have had Broadway tours of Beauty and the Beast, Rent, and Phantom of the Opera which was here for a four week engagement. And this is just the more famous ones. We usually get about 5-7 tours a year. In the fall, Miss Saigon is coming. We are not an artless community. Oklahoma City is an arts driven liberal arts school with a very good reputation and OKC is home to the American Choral Directors Association.

Do a side trip to Guthrie. A really neat town.

islandmom Jun 10th, 2003 08:14 PM

Where can I get more info on these musicals? I guess taking a young child is not considered good manners?

OKC's Civic Center Music Hall hosts most of these. In addition to the touring Broadway productions of Celebrity Attractions, there is also local theatre companies Lyric and Oklahoma City Theatre Company (formerly Synchronicity):

http://www.okcciviccenter.org/

Another OKC playhouse hosting several companies is architecturally funky Stage Center:

http://www.stagecenter.com/

Both of these are located in downtown OKC.

In deference to Leta, Guthrie's Pollard Theatre also hosts plays and musicals:

Hope you can catch a performance or two at these venues! If you have any other questions about OKC and Norman, post a question here or e-mail me: [email protected]

ISLANDMOM: If you want to take a child I might suggest Oklahoma Children's Theatre, which I believe is currently in production of Into the Woods Jr. (a toned town version of the Sondheim musical). I would definetely check out some of the other theatre options without your child. I believe Oklahoma City Theatre Company is doing A Philadelphia Story currently at the Civic Center.

jbrown Jun 15th, 2003 08:29 PM

I meant toned DOWN lol
